Revisiting childhood experiences often brings nostalgia, although some activities can be less enjoyable as an adult. For instance, grilled cheese sandwiches, fireflies, and sandcastles hold a special charm for me now, even more than they did in my youth. However, one aspect I can’t quite embrace is the playground. While I appreciate its role as a space for children to expend energy, the associated demands from my little ones can be overwhelming.

My children expect me to engage in their playtime, whether it’s running after them or joining in on the swings and slides. I had always envisioned the playground as a sanctuary where I could sip my latte and scroll through my phone while they explored independently. This led me to establish a set of guidelines to clarify my position and make our trips to the playground more tolerable.

1. I will not provide endless swinging assistance.

If you want to swing, you need to learn to pump your legs.

2. I will not traverse the monkey bars.

I am not a primate.

3. Sliding down is off the table.

It’s a personal safety concern.

4. At the playground, we are not playmates.

I have my adult friends, and you have yours.

5. Sandboxes should be avoided at all costs.

They are a breeding ground for chaos.

6. Playing hide and seek away from home is not enjoyable for me.

Let’s not do that.

7. There’s no need to shout “LOOK AT ME!!!” every few seconds.

I’m keeping an eye on you. If I miss your slide dismount, I’ll catch the next one.

8. Please refrain from inviting me to the see-saw.

I am aware of my weight relative to yours.

9. Avoid any activities that might lead to an emergency room visit.

The consequences could be severe.

10. Do not declare boredom.

I assure you, the alternative at home will be far duller.

So, are you still eager to play, kids?
