As I reflect on the concept of a bucket list, I can’t help but wonder about the more subtle yet significant milestones I hope my children achieve before they venture out into the world. These aren’t the typical aspirations like achieving success or mastering basic life skills. Instead, they are the everyday accomplishments that would make parenting a bit easier and more fulfilling.

  1. Dress independently… and look presentable while doing so.
  2. Remember to grab their backpack and lunch before heading off to school.
  3. Avoid using their clothes as makeshift napkins.
  4. Master proper hygiene after bathroom visits.
  5. Engage in playdates without my constant supervision.
  6. Shower thoroughly to ensure all shampoo and conditioner is rinsed out.
  7. Return home with everything I sent them with, eight hours prior.
  8. Complete homework assignments without needing a reminder or assistance.
  9. Store their winter gear in the designated area rather than leaving it strewn about.
  10. Learn the importance of lifting the toilet seat.
  11. Tidy up their rooms before I reach my breaking point.
  12. Respond to inquiries about their day with more than just “Fine” or “It’s boring.”
  13. Go to bed and actually sleep through the night.
  14. Brush their teeth twice daily without being prompted or throwing tantrums.
  15. Enter the house without dragging dirt through every room.
  16. Place dirty laundry in the basket, or ideally, in the laundry room.
  17. Refrain from saying “I’m bored.”
  18. Dispose of tissues and socks properly instead of leaving them on the floor.
  19. Put away their clean laundry without being asked, and not all in one drawer or under the bed.
  20. Wash and put away their dishes; I would even accept them just in the sink. If I’m being overly optimistic, perhaps even loading the dishwasher.

While this list may seem ambitious, it’s all part of the journey of parenting, where we can dream that our kids might one day display a modicum of responsibility—like putting the cap back on the toothpaste.
