As a parent, it’s not uncommon to experience the excruciating sensation of stepping on a toy. Over the past few weeks, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve encountered a rogue plastic figure strategically positioned near a staircase or hidden in the carpet. Children have an uncanny ability to leave their toys in the most unfortunate places, often setting a trap for unsuspecting feet. It wasn’t until I became a parent that I realized my life would include hazards like a stray Lego piece or a miniature dinosaur waiting to ambush my foot.
In my quest to maintain a safe living environment, I do my best to keep these tiny toys picked up throughout the day. After all, I’d like to make it to my next milestone birthday without injury! Yet, despite my efforts, I often find myself unable to locate the troublesome toy before it finds me. Sure, my children help tidy up, but their idea of cleaning often involves shuffling blankets from one couch cushion to another, conveniently ignoring the Polly Pocket shoes littering the floor. When I offer appropriate advice such as, “You might want to pick that Lego up; otherwise, it’s going to hurt,” they only giggle at my expense.
Occasionally, my children do find themselves stepping on their toys, and when that happens, there are countless remarks I wish to express. Here are ten things that come to mind:
- Didn’t I warn you?
- Ouch, right?
- Yes! (Followed by a celebratory dance).
- Ha! That’s what you get!
- Neener neener neeeeener.
- Wow, what a bummer for you!
- This is my life several times a week. Just shake it off.
- WHOA! That must be painful!
- Tough it out, buddy.
- That was clearly avoidable.
Of course, I don’t articulate any of these thoughts. Instead, I empathize with my child, understanding their plight all too well as someone who has endured such trauma repeatedly. I know how it feels to have my foot assaulted by a metal toy plane. So, I comfort them, massage their feet, wipe away their tears, and assist them in storing the offending toy.
Meanwhile, in the back of my mind, I can’t help but chuckle at their predicament. In the world of parenting, it’s essential to show compassion, even when secretly relishing that “neener neener neeeeener” moment.
