The Seven Stages of Visiting Target with Children

  1. Denial

As I prepare for the trip to Target, I convince myself that this time will be different. I have a shopping list that includes essential items—like toilet paper and milk—and I firmly believe we can achieve our goal without incident. This visit will not resemble previous chaotic outings. We are capable of completing this task successfully.

  2. Anger

Why does this always happen to me? Why do my children seem unable to handle a simple shopping trip without a meltdown? It feels incredibly frustrating. My patience is wearing thin, and I struggle with my emotions towards my children.

  3. Bargaining

Perhaps if I promise to let them explore the Dollar Spot, they’ll behave. They can choose one toy—maybe even two! A glow stick or a foam sword could be enticing. And why not add some candy to sweeten the deal? I’d do anything to avoid a meltdown, even if it means bending the rules.

  4. Guilt

What have I done to deserve this? Was it the decision to co-sleep or the late potty training? I begin to question my parenting choices. Is my child’s behavior a reflection of my failures? Am I not providing enough love or attention? The self-doubt creeps in.

  5. Depression

In this moment, I feel like the worst parent. I question my ability to ever take my children anywhere without chaos. The weight of disappointment is heavy.

  6. Acceptance

Fine, you win. Go ahead and select a toy from the aisle. This might mean sacrificing my budget for the week, but if it keeps the peace, it’s worth it. Take your new toy and let’s move on. At least one of us is happy now.

  7. Regret

Why did I allow that? What was I thinking? It’s a lesson learned, once again. Children and Target do not mix well—never again will I attempt this. I mean it this time.
