Summer Camp for Adults: No Counselors, Just Fun (and Drinks!)

In June of last year, my partner and I attended a Bat Mitzvah held at a sleepaway camp nestled in the Poconos. For two unforgettable days, we found ourselves cut off from a reliable phone signal, indulging in camp cuisine, sipping on bug juice, and resting in sleeping bags on mini cot-sized beds in gender-segregated bunks with a group of unfamiliar faces. And honestly, it was an incredible experience!

Sure, cramming into a bathroom with ten other women while vying for a glimpse in the lone mirror above the sink was a challenge. But hey—there were s’mores, Coronas, and a thrilling tug-of-war competition! I even donned face paint and a blue tutu all weekend long, fully embracing the camp spirit. We’ve got spirit, yes we do!

As my children head off to sleepaway camp for the fifth year, I can’t help but feel a pang of jealousy as I watch that bus drive away. It seems I’m not alone in this sentiment. This is where Camp No Counselors comes in—a company founded by Jake Madison in 2013 that organizes weekend getaways packed with activities and adult beverages at various camps nationwide, specifically designed for adults like us.

Madison realized that much of adult life is spent in situations that demand confidence, leaving little room for genuine vulnerability. “Camp offered an opportunity to shed our work personas and embrace our true selves,” he explains on the Camp No Counselors website. “More people needed to experience this magic.”

Upcoming Camp Sessions

For those eager to join in on the fun, upcoming camp sessions are scheduled for:

  • June 4-7 in Chicago
  • May 28-31 and September 4-7 in New York
  • August 20-23 in Nashville
  • October 1-4 in Los Angeles

The cost, ranging from $475 to $575, covers roundtrip transportation, three nights in co-ed bunk accommodations, meals and snacks, themed parties each night, and a variety of activities, including archery, arts and crafts, softball, slip-n-slide, tubing, wakeboarding, and ziplining.

On the final night, a camp-wide talent show allows attendees to showcase their hidden talents in front of new friends, often with a drink in hand for a little added liquid courage. Yes, there’s an open bar throughout the weekend, with Bloody Marys even served at breakfast!
