Every year, as the warmer months approach, I find myself dreaming about the joys of summer—those carefree days filled with sunshine and outdoor fun. But as August rolls around, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief knowing that summer is nearing its conclusion. If you’re feeling a bit wistful about the impending arrival of fall, let me share some reasons why I’m actually looking forward to the end of summer.
1. Sunscreen Application
With three children, the task of applying sunscreen feels like a full-time occupation. The search for the right product often leads to frustration. Natural sunscreens take ages to apply effectively, leaving me contemplating how to fund this endeavor. Meanwhile, conventional options have me questioning which is worse: the potentially harmful chemicals or the sun itself.
2. Sand Everywhere
I adore the beach and would marry it if I could, but the persistent sand that comes home with us is a different story. It infiltrates our car, our house, and all our belongings, not to mention it seems to find its way into our kids’ hair, no matter how many times we wash them.
3. Mosquitoes
While not everyone has to contend with mosquitoes, those of us in the Midwest certainly do. It can be challenging to enjoy a lovely summer evening when swarms of these pesky insects are intent on biting you. They seem to ignore citronella candles and can even penetrate clothing, making evenings less enjoyable.
4. Bee Phobia
My kids experience sheer panic at the sight of any bee, or even something that resembles one, like a housefly. Interestingly, none of them have ever been stung. Wasps can be intimidating, but I managed to assert my dominance over one this summer, and it seems to have worked—no wasps have returned since.
5. Band-Aid Bonanza
Summer seems to transform my children into clumsy adventurers. From scraped knees to splinters, the number of Band-Aids we go through skyrockets. I suspect that Band-Aid companies see a significant profit boost during this season.
6. The Daylight Dilemma
You’d think the shorter days would help with bedtime routines, but our kids still argue that it’s not time for bed because “it’s still light outside!” Summer activities often keep us out late, making bedtime a constant struggle for parents like me who are longing for structure.
7. Foot Care Fatigue
The excitement of summer pedicures quickly wears off. By the end of August, I find myself wanting to hide my feet away until next summer.
8. The Endless Shaving Cycle
Despite trying various hair removal methods, I always revert to shaving. I’m not one to skip it, even for a day. However, fall and winter provide some relief from this daily ritual, allowing me to be less concerned about my leg hair in front of others.
9. Laundry Overload
You might think summer would mean fewer clothes to wash, but the reality is quite the opposite. Between swimming, playing in the dirt, and lounging on the grass, laundry piles up faster than ever—especially towels.
10. The Unpleasantness of Sweat
Sweat is not my favorite experience, whether it’s my own or someone else’s. While it’s somewhat acceptable during exercise, perspiring simply from being outside is far from enjoyable. Ideally, temperatures would remain under 75 degrees with low humidity, except for those rare beach days when we can tolerate the heat.
In conclusion, as summer fades away, I find comfort in the thought of cooler weather. The endless cycle of sand, sunscreen, and sweat might be enjoyable for a while, but I’m more than ready for fall to take center stage. Let’s look forward to cozy sweaters and hot cocoa instead.
