As I embark on my daily drive, I humbly seek guidance. Lord, I need your assistance as I navigate through this morning’s journey. The little one still needs to nurse at the crack of dawn, leaving me bleary-eyed and craving that first sip of coffee to spark my focus.
Speaking of caffeine, could you possibly smooth out the drive-thru line at the local coffee shop? It would be wonderful if working parents, especially those with young children, could have a “fast pass” to jump ahead of anyone leisurely sipping their drinks or casually browsing their phones—those folks should know that flip-flops are not appropriate for important errands!
As I sit at the traffic light, waiting for it to cycle from red to green and back again, remind me to cultivate patience and appreciate where I am in the moment. Please also nudge the driver in front of me to put down their phone and pay attention to the road ahead.
When I finally maneuver past a distracted driver engrossed in their texting or animated phone conversation, help me remember the little ears in the backseat soaking up everything I say. Grant me the wisdom to remain calm instead of unleashing a stream of frustration, or perhaps provide me with a delicious breakfast pastry to keep my mouth busy.
Forgive those drivers who come to a complete halt at a flashing yellow light; they are simply unaware of their surroundings. I ask for your support for the construction workers I encounter daily, who seem to be more adept at pointing than making progress. May they gain the efficiency needed to clear the road ahead before I inadvertently take out a few traffic cones.
When I spot what looks like a very young driver behind the wheel of a large SUV, I am reminded of my own youthful driving days. However, I also recall the carefree ’90s when seatbelts were optional in the backseat of our sky blue station wagon—surely, we can do better for the next generation. Let us strive for improved safety measures and fashion choices, starting with raising the driving age and perhaps implementing safety helmets until they reach adulthood. (Bonus points if those helmets deter phone use, making out, and the quest for coolness.)
Should I find myself needing to apply makeup in the preschool parking lot, attend to my pumping needs while driving, or even break down in tears after a long day, shield me from judgmental glares—especially from truck drivers, who should empathize with my car-bound lifestyle.
Ultimately, please guide me home safely at the end of the day, with my children in tow, and minimize the pleas for fast food from both the backseat and my own cravings, because who doesn’t long for a greasy hamburger at that hour?
And as the day winds down and I consider the idea of expanding our family, remind me of the time my son attempted to use his sippy cup as a weapon during rush hour, while his baby sister cheered him on. Let me remember that goldfish don’t leave messes on my carpet or wake me at odd hours demanding snacks—wouldn’t that be a preferable alternative? However, Lord, I’d still rather clean up messes from my home than a car seat, any time of day. Amen.
