The lead researcher, Jamie Larkins, found that women with a history of gestational diabetes had thicker carotid artery intima-media compared to those without. Out of the study group, about 13% (119 women) experienced gestational diabetes, and their carotid artery measurements were, on average, 0.023 millimeters thicker. By the end of the study, 13 women had suffered some cardiovascular events, including one from the gestational diabetes group.
Larkins noted, “Our findings suggest that having gestational diabetes increases a woman’s risk for early, subtle signs of atherosclerosis before she even develops type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Pregnancy is often overlooked as a critical time that can indicate a woman’s higher risk for future heart issues, and gestational diabetes is a telling sign.”
