Preparing for a New Addition: A Personal Journey

The news of my pregnancy just days before my forty-third birthday left me both astonished and elated. My daughters, ages 16 and 11, had filled my life with joy, yet I had yearned for another pregnancy since their early years. After a 1.5-year journey to conceive my second child, I had resigned myself to the idea that another baby might not be in my future. During the time my daughters were in elementary school, we welcomed a three-year-old boy from Russia, whom we adopted. Integrating him into our family dynamic was challenging; it took time for all of us to adjust to the whirlwind he brought with him.

Shortly after Viktor’s eighth birthday, I discovered I was expecting again. The entire family was thrilled—everyone except my son, who couldn’t mask his feelings of sadness and fear. While tears of joy flowed from the rest of us, Viktor felt that this new baby threatened his place within our family. My husband and I reassured him of his importance, especially as a role model for the baby, but it was a tough realization for him to accept.

Over time, Viktor began to embrace the idea of having a little brother, someone he could guide and play with. However, when he learned I was having another daughter, his reaction intensified. He retreated outside, overwhelmed by anger and grief. I tried to console him by reminding him of his best friend, a girl who shared his interests in army games, cars, and physical play, but I wasn’t sure my words helped. While the rest of us eagerly planned for our new arrival, Viktor seemed to remain in denial about the impending changes.

When Claire finally arrived, she was a tiny bundle of joy, and Viktor quickly fell in love with her. He held her with care, studied her delicate features, and mimicked the way my husband cradled her. He proudly shared stories about her with his teacher and classmates. One day, while I was attending to the crying baby, Viktor quietly remarked to her, “You know what is really sad? When I was a baby like you, nobody took care of me like this.” His tender observation revealed a deep understanding of his own past and a newfound commitment to ensuring Claire never experienced that neglect.

As Claire grew, Viktor began to see me in a new light. He witnessed the day-to-day nurturing I provided for her, something he felt he missed out on during his early years. After my return from the hospital, he expressed a desire to sleep near us, wanting to hear my “sweet voice” and see Claire’s “cute little face.” This showed how much he longed for those early moments he had been absent from.

Before Claire’s birth, Viktor often felt like an outsider in our family. He recognized that he had missed out on many experiences and his own early years with us. However, with Claire, he was present from the very beginning, solidifying his role as her brother. She has no memories of life before him, and to her, he is simply her sibling.

As Claire transitioned into toddlerhood, their sibling relationship evolved into a typical one, filled with teasing, annoyance, and playful rivalry. Despite their occasional squabbles, Claire continues to admire her brother, and he loves her in return. This relationship has been a learning experience for all of us. Viktor had previously faced challenges such as hyperactivity and sensory issues, which Claire also displays, sometimes even more intensely. This connection has helped me comprehend the nuances of both of their experiences, and I realize that I could have easily given birth to a child like him—because I did.

It’s fascinating how life unfolds. A little boy entered our lives, bringing lessons for everyone involved, followed by a little girl who somehow made those lessons easier to navigate. This narrative is just one of many love stories that shape our family’s journey.
