Navigating the Countdown to Bedtime: A New Parent’s Perspective

As a new mother, I find myself reflecting on the journey of motherhood, now just ten weeks, five days, and four hours in. I track this time meticulously, as the minutes leading up to bedtime often feel both endless and fleeting. We have successfully survived a full 24 hours together—no major disasters, no one has lost their mind (yet), and aside from a minor squabble over the swaddle, we are managing quite well. In my world of baby wraps, bouncers, and sleep training, making it to bedtime without any significant incidents feels like a victory.

However, as the day comes to a close, an insidious feeling of guilt creeps in. Guilt is a crafty emotion. Unlike the direct frustration my little one expresses when I fail to meet her feeding demands—an honest and raw display of her needs—guilt takes the backroads, preying on my insecurities and fears. Throughout the day, I often feel overwhelmed by the weight of motherhood, the expectations it brings, and the emotional whirlwind that accompanies that tiny, seven-pound being. I question if I should simply relish the joy of motherhood, especially knowing how many others might long for this experience. Guilt whispers those thoughts into my ear like a persistent companion.

Postpartum depression, much like guilt, can be an unpredictable adversary. Its intensity fluctuates, often improving slowly but sometimes taking a turn for the worse. The upheaval in my life leaves me wondering if I will raise my child correctly, if she will resent me, or if she might find herself in precarious situations, like being chased by wolves—or worse, adopting the characteristics of pop icons.

My daughter, Clara, is the center of my universe, yet there are days when I find myself wishing for a long nap from her, just so I can accomplish simple tasks like cooking with both hands, enjoying a shower, or, heaven forbid, catching up on sleep. For now, I’ll celebrate the fact that it’s 5.5 hours to bedtime and we’ve made it through another day unscathed.

WIN.

In summary, motherhood can be both rewarding and challenging, filled with moments of joy and the occasional pang of guilt. The journey is unique for every parent, and it’s important to acknowledge the emotions that come with it, while also seeking out resources that can support you along the way.
