Attention parents, it’s time to take control of your family’s schedule. Gone are the days of racing around town at all hours. How did I manage this transformation without giving up my three children? I implemented an extra-curricular overhaul! If your kids’ commitments are overwhelming, I encourage you to follow my lead.

The Extra-Curricular Overhaul

1. Prioritize Convenient Class Times.

Nap time is non-negotiable! It doesn’t matter if the popular mom from the local playgroup has convinced everyone to enroll in a 1 PM music class. Take the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility of your home. This advice also applies to full-time working parents who find themselves entangled in evening activities. You can always sing fun songs at dinner and avoid the chaos of a 6 PM class.

2. Limit Unnecessary Travel.

If there’s a perfectly suitable soccer league nearby, there’s no need to drive thirty minutes to join a league that everyone else is attending. Evaluate whether that extra travel is worth your precious weekend hours. Remember, in the realm of extra-curricular activities, convenience is key.

3. Choose Activities Independently of Friends.

Who exactly is this “everyone”? Your friendships will endure even if you choose different activities for your children. Let’s be honest, a lot of time spent at these events is often consumed by parents on their phones or chasing younger siblings. Dedicate quality time to nurture your friendships outside of the bleachers. If some connections fade because your child is pursuing ballet instead of soccer, those weren’t true friendships to begin with.

4. Don’t Base Activities on Your Child’s Friendships.

It’s important not to project our social anxieties onto our children. If the timing and location that best suit your family means your child won’t know anyone in their class, that’s acceptable! Kids’ friendships are fluid and often temporary. Don’t let your family’s schedule be dictated by your child’s current favorite buddy.

5. Let Go of the Superstar Dream.

We often overcommit ourselves in hopes that our children will become the next prodigy, but this is a misconception. Even if we accept that our child may not become the next sports legend, we still justify our busy schedules with the idea of fostering hobbies. I want my kids to explore their interests organically, at no cost, and within walking distance of our home.

6. Be Mindful of Financial Realities.

Children need to understand that there are other family members with needs and wants too. The rising costs of activities should prompt you to reconsider your choices. Why should you sacrifice your social life and vacations while your child dabbles in numerous activities each semester? It’s time to take a stand.

So, who’s with me? Let’s park our mini-vans, unite, and reclaim our days, nights, and weekends! Let the overhaul commence.
