Navigating the Journey of Solo Parenting: A Tribute to Single Moms

As a medical professional, I recognize the significance of partnership in parenting. My spouse, a dedicated surgeon, is often unavailable due to his demanding schedule. However, when he is home, he excels as a father and partner, engaging in activities like building Lego structures or baking muffins. Despite these precious moments, the reality is that my children and I frequently navigate our daily lives independently.

I take immense pride in managing three children while out and about. Initially, I acquired a cumbersome triple stroller, which I quickly deemed impractical. Instead, I invested in scooters, balance bikes, and two-wheelers to enable my older two to move freely while I care for the youngest. When challenges arise, like meltdowns, I utilize a baby carrier to support my nearly 25-pound toddler while navigating the double stroller with my older boys.

The kindness of strangers often comes into play—whether it’s assisting with a heavy stroller, holding a door open, or keeping an eye on my kids while I manage a bill at a restaurant. Mornings begin with the familiar sound of my boys awakening far earlier than desired, calling out for me. I handle everything from fixing broken toys to cooking meals, cleaning up messes, and managing snow shoveling and trash disposal. I jokingly refer to this as “solo parenting,” yet I acknowledge that I am not truly alone.

Regardless of how often I find myself with the kids, the percentage of daily responsibilities I shoulder, or the moments of feeling overwhelmed, I cannot equate my experience to that of a single mother. Those incredible women are genuinely navigating life without a partner.

We often flock to local parks, not just to exhaust our energetic children before naptime but to seek connection with fellow mothers. We participate in parenting classes, breastfeeding support groups, and organized playdates, all in pursuit of camaraderie. It’s become clear: parenting is not a journey to be undertaken alone.

During those chaotic moments—whether I’m wrangling my little ones, serving dinner, or trying to engage them creatively on a Saturday morning—I sometimes feel overwhelmed. But then I remember that my husband will eventually return, often showering me with praise for managing everything alone and offering crucial emotional support, even if he can’t always physically assist.

I can’t imagine the loneliness of knowing that your partner may be late or, worse, that they won’t return at all. For these women, being “on your own” is a permanent reality, not a temporary state. They are the sole providers for their families, emotionally and financially.

So, no, I’m not truly navigating this journey alone. Here’s to all the single mothers out there. Whether you’re a young mom or an experienced one, whether your children remind you of someone you loved and lost, or perhaps someone who was never part of your life, you carry the weight of responsibility alone. You face inquiries from strangers, juggle every task, and never have the luxury of saying, “That’s Daddy’s job.” Every diaper change, every midnight comfort, and every moment without a sick day is yours alone.

Who provides you with relief? Who do you turn to when you need to vent? Who do you call when you accidentally bump into another car? How do you summon the energy to fulfill your children’s needs? Who loves them as fiercely as you do? Who reassures you of your beauty, even in sweatpants?

This is my heartfelt tribute to you, Single Mother. If you’ve made it through another day, if you’ve managed to smile, or even if your hair is somewhat presentable, you deserve recognition. I’ll meet you at the playground anytime.
