Home Insemination Kit: A Lava Lamp Experiment Gone Awry

Today, I encountered a DIY lava lamp experiment while browsing online and decided to bookmark it for future use. However, I made the error of leaving the page open. When my son, Jamie, came over to see what I was doing, he got excited and asked, “Can we make that today?” Of course, I replied.

I gathered the necessary supplies: measuring cups, vegetable oil, and a glass jar. It wasn’t until I was ready to start that I realized we were out of food coloring. Jamie’s expression instantly fell. “Don’t worry, I’ll get some when Dad comes home,” I assured him.

When my partner, Alex, arrived, I held true to my word. There’s a Whole Foods just five minutes away, so I called to confirm they had food coloring in stock. They did. Great!

Upon reaching the store, I found the food coloring, but the price was a staggering TWENTY DOLLARS. I spent several minutes weighing whether to pay the premium or drive 15 minutes to Giant, where I knew it was cheaper. Imagining Jamie’s disappointment, I begrudgingly decided to buy it.

As I stood in line, the cashier asked about my day. I smiled and remarked that I was about to spend twenty bucks on food coloring. She chuckled and suggested I could have gone to Giant, where it’s much cheaper. I thanked her and left the store, empty-handed.

I drove over to Giant, where I found the food coloring for a mere four dollars. Excitedly, I stood in line, reading about celebrity news, only to realize at the register that I had left my wallet behind at Whole Foods. After a quick trip back to retrieve it, I successfully purchased the overpriced food coloring, rolling my eyes at myself for my earlier decision.

Once home, Jamie was eager to dive into the lava lamp experiment. Together, we added oil, salt, water, and the food coloring into the jar, eagerly anticipating the expected visual display. However, as we waited, nothing happened. I turned to my son and said, “Isn’t it supposed to do something?” I felt awful having let him down.

I suspect the all-natural food coloring was to blame. So, Pinterest, we’re officially done here.
