Dear Mia and Jacob,
As I awoke this morning, the weight of the reality that today marks your first day at a new school lingered in my mind. You are about to embark on yet another exciting chapter in your lives. Throughout our morning routine, I reflected on the myriad of thoughts I wished to share with you—thoughts we’ve touched on before, but as your mother, I feel compelled to reiterate, just in case you need a little extra encouragement.
As I gently entered your room and kissed you awake, I wanted to remind you that I understand what it feels like to be the new kid. I know those butterflies in your stomach and the uncertainty of making friends. Always believe in yourself—I certainly do.
While you rubbed your eyes and stretched, I wanted to acknowledge the worry that often accompanies finding your way, both in navigating the school and making social connections. It’s a journey you’ll continue throughout life. So, never lose heart.
Standing at the bathroom door while you brushed your teeth, I wanted to say that being the new kid can sometimes feel like a disadvantage, but it can also be an advantage. Embrace this adventure; it holds countless possibilities.
While laying out your clothes, I wanted to remind you that your newness will attract others. Some may not accept you, but that’s okay; it will ultimately be their loss.
As I prepared your lunch at the counter, I thought it was important to encourage you to approach this new experience with optimism. While it may feel strange and daunting today, soon it will become routine—this is the natural cycle of life.
I tucked a note in your lunchbox, a family tradition, hoping it would ease your nerves. Remember, sometimes a simple smile can be the start of a wonderful friendship. A smile can convey more than a thousand words.
As you sat at the counter for breakfast, I wanted to tell you that if you ever feel uncomfortable today, just take a moment to breathe deeply. You’ll be surprised at how a few breaths can shift your perspective dramatically.
When I helped you tie your shoes, I wanted to impart the wisdom that all you need is one good friend. Quality truly matters more than quantity.
As I placed your backpack on your small shoulders, I felt my heart tugging between the desire to keep you safe at home and the need for you to explore experiences beyond my reach. Just promise me you won’t rush to grow up too quickly.
In the car, I prayed that everyone you meet today sees you as I do—intelligent, kind, caring, humorous, and creative. More importantly, I hope you always recognize those qualities within yourself.
As I buckled your seatbelt, I wanted to remind you that not everyone will share your interests. Embrace those differences; they may lead to delightful surprises.
While adjusting my mirrors and catching a glimpse of you, I wanted to stress the importance of patience—both with yourself and others. Time has a remarkable way of leading us through life’s ups and downs.
As we backed out of the driveway, I wanted to encourage you to fearlessly try something new. That’s the beauty of a fresh start.
Driving the short distance to school, I wanted to emphasize the value of listening—whether to your teacher or a new friend. This skill will serve you well throughout life.
As we arrived at the drop-off lane, I wanted to advise you to follow instructions when needed but always remember to express yourself. It’s perfectly okay to speak up.
As you exited the vehicle, I embraced you both and said, “Be yourself, and always remember how deeply I love you. I can’t wait to hear about your day when you get home.”
In the end, that’s truly what you needed to hear.
With all my love,
Mom
