20 (Questionable) Approaches to Naming Your Child

Once you confirm your pregnancy with a positive test and place your prenatal vitamins on your nightstand, the next step is selecting a name. As Shakespeare once pondered, “What’s in a name?” my response would be, “Uh, EVERYTHING.”

If you’re struggling to settle on a name, consider these unconventional strategies:

  1. Share your name ideas with anyone nearby, allowing them to critique and present their own “better” options.
  2. Open a baby name book to a random page, close your eyes, and point. If it’s there, it must be a winner, right?
  3. Choose a name based on a pop culture figure that will likely fade into obscurity by the time your child starts school.
  4. Better yet, merge two pop culture names of figures likely to be forgotten soon. How about “Kardashianbey” (Kardashian + Beyoncé)?
  5. Name your child after the location of conception. “Couch Corner” might sound odd, but the stories will be memorable!
  6. Allow your doctor to suggest a name. After all, they’ve been doing this all day and may have some creative ideas.
  7. Conduct a poll on your blog to let your readers decide. Because why not let the internet name your child?
  8. Spell out your preferred television network. “Emteevee” has a cute ring to it, doesn’t it?
  9. Play a game of pin the tail on the alphabet. Blindfold yourself, stick letters on a wall, and select a few at random. Just hope for at least one vowel!
  10. Let your older child type on the keyboard for a few seconds, and use whatever jumble they create. “Qwertylkj” could be the next big name!
  11. Explore nature-inspired names beyond the typical. Instead of “River” or “Sky,” consider “Volcano” or “Tornado.”
  12. Choose a classic name and add some flair with extra vowels and consonants. Get imaginative!
  13. Opt for a tech-inspired name. “Pixel,” “Byte,” or “Giga” could work well.
  14. Use their name to predict their future career. “Doctor” or “CEO” could be powerful choices.
  15. Look for names that carry meanings you find appealing. Surely there’s a name that means “future artist destined to create chaos with markers.”
  16. Skip the naming process entirely and let your child choose their own name on their third birthday. Kids can be surprisingly discerning.
  17. Combine elements from the Periodic Table for a unique name. “LiNeO” (Lithium + Neon + Oxygen) could be fun!
  18. Channel your inner artist, like Prince, and create a symbol for the birth certificate. You can always change it later!
  19. Pay tribute to your favorite dish. “Taco” or “Sushi” could be unique and flavorful choices!
  20. Or commemorate your favorite beverage. Imagine the graduation ceremony for “Coca Cola”!
