As a parent, I typically assign my children the responsibility of tidying their own rooms. This approach cultivates a sense of accountability and ownership, essential traits that contribute to their character development. Furthermore, it prepares them for the independence of adulthood. Admittedly, I also prefer to avoid the chaos that comes with their clutter.
However, there are moments—perhaps once a year—when my intervention becomes necessary. Such occasions arise when:
- I notice a considerable portion of my cutlery and all my bowls have mysteriously vanished.
- The odor emanating from the room becomes so pronounced that it earns a nickname, like “Stench Central.”
- We find ourselves late to school or other engagements because I’m rummaging through my tween’s mess to locate a frequently misplaced item.
If you’re managing a similar situation and find yourself needing to step in, here are some strategic steps to consider:
- Timing is Key: Wait until your tween is away—be it at school, camp, or a relative’s house. This will ensure you have uninterrupted time and spare you the drama of a distressed tween shouting about their perceived rights.
- Gather Your Supplies: Assemble the necessary tools: trash bags, recycling containers, cleaning spray, cloths, a vacuum, gloves, and possibly even a shovel and a hazmat suit for safety.
- Ventilate the Room: Open the door and windows, regardless of the outside temperature. Fresh air is essential for this endeavor.
- Identify the Source of the Odor: Locate and remove any offending items, which may include moldy food, dirty socks, or unidentifiable clothing. Be warned—there may be multiple sources of the smell.
- Laundry Time: Collect all clothing from the floor, regardless of whether you suspect some are clean. If it’s been on the floor, it needs a wash.
- Dispose of Trash: Start collecting the waste, which hopefully consists of nothing more than used tissues and snack wrappers. Prepare for the worst, and if anything is stuck to the floor, cut it free or rearrange furniture to conceal it.
- Recover Kitchen Items: Retrieve any missing dishes or utensils. Evaluate if items are salvageable; if not, toss them. Clean the rest by soaking them and then running them through a dishwasher cycle.
- Clear Under Furniture: Pull out everything from beneath the bookcase, desk, and bed. After sorting through the mess, repeat the cleaning processes previously mentioned.
- Sweet Treats: If you uncover any secret candy stashes, indulge yourself guilt-free. Just remember to wash your hands first!
- Sort the Remaining Items: Create two piles: one for items you wish to keep and another for those that can be discarded. Put away the essentials and hide the extraneous items until you can donate them—make sure to hide them well.
- Surface Cleaning: Wipe down the walls, doors, and all other surfaces. Once finished, dispose of the cleaning cloth.
- Vacuum: Finally, vacuum the floor and relish the rediscovery of your carpet’s original color.
Capture a few photos of this pristine state for future reference, as it’s likely to revert to a state of disarray within a day.
When your tween returns, don your headphones and crank up your favorite tunes. Consider having the neighbors over for a movie to drown out the inevitable outcry, “MY ROOM IS UNRECOGNIZABLE! I CAN’T STAND THESE CONDITIONS!”
Important Note: If you stumble upon your tween’s journal, resist the urge to read it. Respect their privacy—some things are better left unread.
