My Children Don’t Always Take Priority

As a parent, I recognize that my children are incredibly important to me. However, it’s essential to understand that they don’t always come first. There are times when I find myself in the midst of preparing dinner, and while my daughter struggles to take off her own shoe—which she had put on for no clear reason—I may not be able to assist her immediately. Similarly, while folding laundry, I might ask my son to wait a few moments before I join him in a game of Toddler Tag. Even during phone conversations, I may choose to finish my discussion before getting snacks for the kids.

My children, while bright, funny, and full of personality, must learn valuable life skills from an early age. I strive to teach them manners, kindness, forgiveness, and most importantly, patience. Life is filled with instances where waiting is necessary—whether it’s waiting for a bus, for a meal to arrive at a restaurant, or even for a beloved TV show to load while enjoying a late-night treat. Society inherently requires us to wait, and it is crucial for children to understand this concept early on.

Of course, there are situations demanding immediate attention, such as when a loud crash is followed by tears, or when someone is sick. There are also moments when I willingly set aside chores to engage with my children, whether it’s taking off a shoe or dancing to their favorite theme song. However, I do not do this every time. It is important for them to grasp that they are not the center of the universe.

They hold a significant place in my life, but my role as a parent includes equipping them to be respectful, capable, and successful individuals. To achieve this, they must learn to wait, practice patience, and find contentment in their own thoughts until their needs can be met.

In the long run, I hope my children will appreciate these lessons. If not, well, I might just need to budget for their therapy.
