The Stay-at-Home Parent Challenge

For those of you who are stay-at-home parents of children under five, you understand the intensity of this role. It’s not just about being home all day; it’s about maintaining your sanity while juggling a multitude of tasks. You strive to keep your patience intact as you navigate through the chaos of daily life—attempting to accomplish even one small task without the entire house descending into disarray.

Just when you think you can check off that last item on your to-do list, the unexpected occurs. Your toddler decides that the folded laundry is a perfect mess to create or the toilet overflows right as you load the dishwasher. It’s a constant battle between fulfilling household responsibilities and spending quality time with your children.

I’m tired of the skepticism from those who question what I accomplish in a day. Those adults who leave home each morning to interact with colleagues who don’t throw tantrums every ten minutes are blissfully unaware of how effortless their days are by comparison.

To those who dismiss the challenges of being a stay-at-home parent, I present the Stay-at-Home Parent Challenge. This isn’t something you can try at home; instead, you will attempt it in your workplace. For the sake of clarity, let’s say your name is… Ben.

Here are the rules of the challenge:

  • You have three colleagues—let’s call them Employee A, B, and C.
  • You cannot dismiss them; they must stay with you at all times.
  • Swearing is off-limits.
  • You have three tasks to complete:
    1. Make a five-minute phone call.
    2. Type up, print, and present a document to a group of five people while your colleagues are in the room.
    3. Keep your workspace, the restroom, and one meeting room tidy throughout the day.

Ready? Begin! You’ll start the day feeling energetic, perhaps even a bit overconfident. You set your colleagues up in the meeting room with a simple task. As soon as you leave them, they’re quiet and cooperative. You head to your office, sit at your desk, and just as you’re about to start typing, you hear, “BEEEEEN! Look what Employee C did!”

You rush back to the meeting room and see chaos. Your presentation is in an hour, and you must clean up the mess. After regaining control, you return to your office, only to be interrupted again moments later.

You finally gain some momentum typing your document, but then you need a restroom break. As you tiptoe past the meeting room, you glance inside and are met with another disaster. Remember, no shouting or losing your temper; that could leave lasting impressions on your colleagues.

After a brief moment of composure and with a presentation looming, you decide to relocate your colleagues to another room. However, on your return, you find that Employee C has transformed into a miniature diva, and you have no time to remedy the situation.

During your presentation, chaos ensues as Employee C attempts to unbutton your shirt while Employee A cries over a smudge of nail polish. You desperately need a moment to breathe, but you still have a phone call to make and that first meeting room to clean up.

Then nature calls. You tell your colleagues to entertain themselves for a few minutes while you run to the restroom, only to be bombarded by an avalanche of questions as soon as you lock the door. You reluctantly allow them to join you, and the inquiries begin.

Once you manage to finish your business, you return them to your office and promise a reward for good behavior during your phone call. You dial the number and step into the corridor, only to have your colleagues shout your name repeatedly, demanding attention.

With no time to spare, you return to your office, confident that you’ve instilled some fear in your colleagues. After completing your phone call, you brace yourself for the chaos awaiting you upon returning to the office.

But don’t worry; it’s only 10:00 AM. You still have several hours left before you get to leave. Unless you’re a stay-at-home parent, in which case, this whirlwind continues 24/7.
