In my current approach to life, I select clothing that appeals to me and is suitable for the occasion, without dwelling on whether it reflects “who I am.” My focus has shifted to creating a home that is cozy, visually pleasing, and practical, rather than obsessing over whether it conveys “my unique style.” I’ve come to realize that pondering my preferences is not something that captivates my attention.
Ultimately, I express myself through my passion for writing, which I find far more engaging than the aesthetics of my footwear or home décor. I’ve recognized that I don’t need to stress over the appearance of my possessions if they don’t genuinely matter to me.
Many individuals derive immense joy from making thoughtful choices, knowing what they love, and investing time in selecting items that resonate with them. However, an important principle of adulthood is this: just because something brings joy to one person doesn’t mean it will bring joy to another. I prefer to avoid overanalyzing the need to make authentic decisions about things that don’t resonate with me personally. Life is fleeting, and our mental energy is precious.
Interestingly, while I relinquished the notion of needing to express my personal style, I also contemplated my guiding principle: Be Eliza. Although these concepts may seem similar, they are, in reality, quite distinct. Ironically, after spending considerable time focusing on “Being Eliza,” I’ve gained clarity on my own tastes.
While I’m still not inclined to invest effort into ensuring my preferences are reflected in my belongings, my understanding of what I enjoy has deepened. For example, I’ve recently been exploring the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany and his exquisite creation, Laurelton Hall, which I find truly captivating.
