Parenting can be quite peculiar. To navigate the chaos in my household, I’ve found myself engaging in some rather unusual behaviors—activities that would have made my younger self exclaim, “Get me out of this bizarre situation!” Yet, these oddities often stem from either a desire for fun or sheer exhaustion, particularly when the idea of dining out with children seems appealing, even if it leads to disarray.

Here are twelve of the most unconventional things I have done as a parent:

  1. Bought an array of items for my children without any external pressure: a slingshot, glitter pens, Play-Doh, a plastic sword, a rainbow loom, LEGO sets, and stickers.
  2. Held a toy elephant over the sink and pretended it was urinating after telling my daughter that her stuffed animal couldn’t sit on the toilet.
  3. Encouraged my children to express their opinions. (In hindsight, why would I do that?)
  4. Sang incorrect lyrics to popular songs while dancing awkwardly to persuade my child to do tasks they were resisting, such as, “Let it go! Let it go! Let that poop come o-o-out!”
  5. Deliberately gave gum to my three-year-old.
  6. Found myself so fatigued that I searched the house for my phone, only to realize I was already talking on it.
  7. Accidentally tucked one of my daughter’s stuffed animals into bed, resulting in a lengthy bedtime routine filled with additional requests.
  8. Deceived my daughter into believing that the mushroom she was eating was chicken, and internally giggled when she not only ate it but enjoyed it.
  9. On more than one occasion, I was so impressed by the size of my child’s bowel movement that I invited my partner to come and observe it.
  10. During a moment of weakness, I allowed my children to choose anything they wanted from the bookstore, which led to an overwhelming array of indecision.
  11. We have empowered our children to be independent, but now they insist they can do everything themselves—even when they are doing it incorrectly.
  12. Assisted another person with a suppository.

In summary, the journey of parenthood is filled with bizarre and often humorous experiences. Embracing these odd moments is part of what makes life as a parent both chaotic and rewarding.
