8 Weight Loss Strategies Inspired by Kids

Every year, I find myself in the same predicament. After indulging in holiday treats and seeing the numbers on the scale rise, I declare that this will be the year I finally get in shape. This time, I’m serious about fitting back into those pre-kid jeans. But first, let me just finish these last few cookies.

As I sift through a mountain of advice from diet and fitness experts about how to tone my body and achieve “Fab Abs in Just Six Minutes a Day,” I often become overwhelmed and resort to stress-eating. It’s a frustrating cycle, to say the least.

However, I recently realized that some of the best fitness wisdom has been right in front of me – quite literally. My children, who have contributed to my weight gain (it’s not just the cookies, I promise), can also guide me on my journey to weight loss. This year, I’m creating a transformative program for parents and caregivers that will help shed unwanted pounds by simply emulating what kids do.

Forget spending a fortune on personal trainers or expensive gym memberships; just incorporate these playful movements into your daily routine, which draw from various exercise styles, including yoga and martial arts:

  1. The Pee-Pee Pretzel: Cross one leg over the other and squirm energetically while insisting that you don’t need the restroom. Then, make a dash for the toilet.
  2. The Terrorizer: Suddenly charge at an unsuspecting family member (preferably a sibling) and envelop them in a playful hug, resembling an octopus in action.
  3. The Flyer: Locate something taller than yourself, climb it, and leap off. Repeat the process for an exhilarating cardio burst.
  4. The Drag & Drop: Empty the contents of your closet into the living room, stomp around in frustration for half an hour, then return everything to its place.
  5. The Mile-a-Minute: When sharing a story, speak rapidly, bounce from foot to foot, and animate your gestures. Extend the tale until your listener starts to zone out for maximum aerobic effect.
  6. The Cushion Commando: Sprint across the couch cushions until someone tells you to stop—and if they don’t, keep going! Bonus points for taking a flying leap off the armrest.
  7. The Streak: Before your bath, run around the house in the nude. Repeat after your shower, this time using a towel as a cape.
  8. The Terrible Two: The moment you feel the slightest urge, throw yourself on the floor and flail your limbs in dramatic fashion, whether it’s due to sleepiness, hunger, or a desire for your apple slices to be reassembled.

In conjunction with this program, I plan to develop a kid-inspired dietary guide filled with fun tips like “take two bites of dinner and push the rest around your plate” and “snack on unidentifiable crumbs found in furniture crevices.” Additionally, I’ll provide strategies for how to stay active throughout the day fueled by just a handful of Goldfish crackers and a few raisins.

This year, I am determined to get fit. Who’s ready to join me on this playful journey?
