Have you ever returned home to discover that your spouse has constructed a detailed treehouse while you were out running errands? This is a regular occurrence for me.
I’ve walked in to find my partner, Alex, enthusiastically strumming a ukulele he just learned to play or placing a bid on a vintage VW van he intends to transform into a camper, despite lacking any automotive knowledge. On one occasion, I had to intervene when he attempted to create paint for our kids using some spiky red plants he found during a hike. His boundless curiosity can be both awe-inspiring and draining. A road trip with him is an adventure in itself as he inquires about every historical building we pass and the geological formations surrounding us—questions to which I never have answers. He struggles to sit still, making movie theaters a source of discomfort for him, while I relish in the opportunity to just sit and relax.
The downside of his creative nature is a tendency to neglect mundane tasks like laundry or remembering where he placed things. Alex believes that if items are hidden away in drawers, they cease to exist for him. He prefers to keep everything in plain sight, which clashes with my inclination to organize and declutter. As a result, I often find myself as the sole keeper of our household’s whereabouts.
Having spent many years together, we’ve largely found a way to balance his creative energy with my more structured approach. He immerses himself in his projects while I manage to tidy up his workspace. Both of us have embraced our individual quirks, which is essentially the essence of marriage.
One undeniable truth is that life with Alex is never dull. There are always songs to sing, art to create, and new skills to explore.
