Have you ever encountered one of those “crunchy” moms while shopping for groceries? You know the type—perusing organic fruits and vegetables, passionately discussing environmental issues with her little one, or expressing concerns over genetically modified foods. (Guilty as charged!) Perhaps you’ve had a less-than-pleasant interaction with one that left you with a lasting impression. As a self-identified crunchy mom, I’m here to share seven candid truths about our world—truths we often shy away from admitting.
1. We’re Not Always Fans of Fellow Crunchy Moms
Believe me, we can relate. There’s nothing more irritating than being interrupted mid-sentence by someone who condescendingly questions why your child isn’t enrolled in a toddler yoga class or chastises you for vaccinating. We often find ourselves rolling our eyes while mentally chanting affirmations. While not all crunchy moms are difficult, some truly can be, and we sympathize with you non-crunchy moms on that front.
2. Grocery Shopping Can Be Overwhelming
If you spot us in the store, disheveled and on the brink of tears, it’s likely because we’re grappling with the reality of finding suitable food for our families. Many crunchy moms adhere to specific dietary choices such as veganism or non-GMO lifestyles, making commercial grocery stores feel like a foreign land. Approach with caution; if you ask about our struggles, you may end up with a lengthy discourse on the perils of large agribusiness!
3. We Create More Waste Than We’d Like to Admit
We proudly chant the recycling mantra: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Yet, in reality, our children—just like any others—generate their fair share of waste. Despite our best intentions, it’s frustrating to witness our eco-friendly efforts sometimes fall short. We acknowledge this and prefer not to dwell on it in conversation.
4. We Lose Our Composure, Just Like Everyone Else
On certain mornings, when chaos strikes before breakfast, even our best intentions for mindfulness can go out the window. On those days, we might contemplate whether banging our heads against the wall is a viable option to restore our calmness.
5. Our Kids Are Not Always the Calm, Zen Beings We Aspire For
No amount of meditation or crystal healing can prevent our toddlers from erupting over the tiniest frustrations. We may have learned to manage our emotions through alternative practices, but we often forget that our children’s behavior stems from their developmental stages. Personally, I’m more focused on raising a well-mannered, potty-trained child rather than a tiny genius—and I think many fellow crunchy moms feel the same.
6. Self-Care Often Takes a Backseat
While we can list the components of an ideal self-care regimen in a heartbeat, finding the time to actually implement it is another story. After preparing snacks and cleaning up, self-care can easily slip down our priority list.
7. Sleep Often Wins Over Yoga
When faced with the choice between sneaking in extra sleep or heading to a yoga class, we might just fib about our commitment to wellness. Moms need rest, and with so many of our personal needs overlooked (referencing point five), sleep sometimes takes precedence over exercise. We might tell you we chose yoga, hoping to project an image of balance we aspire to achieve someday.
In conclusion, being a mom is challenging, regardless of your parenting style. We all share the same goal: raising happy, healthy children. Whether you identify as a crunchy mom, a fitness enthusiast, a career-driven mom, or a blend of all three, each of us faces the daily grind of motherhood. Let’s support one another in this journey instead of judging each other.
