Have you ever pondered the future of our planet if we fail to prioritize its care? Could we find ourselves lounging with cocktails on the shores of Nevada? Or might the Statue of Liberty become merely a torch submerged beneath the waves? Perhaps we could even plan a diving excursion in what was once Washington, DC?
While these scenarios might appear alarming, humor can sometimes help us cope with the reality of our environmental crises. With current administrations rolling back climate change regulations and proposing significant budget cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the urgency to act has never been clearer.
A Boulder-based advertising agency, Greenway Creative, has developed a series of imaginative posters that depict the grim possibilities of future travel destinations if we choose to ignore climate change. These images, darkly humorous in their absurdity, were re-released in conjunction with an upcoming March for Science event, and they are available for free download.
We spoke with Sarah Mitchell, co-founder of Greenway Creative and an advocate for environmental consciousness, about the inspiration behind these posters. As a mother of two, Sarah emphasizes the importance of instilling in her children the values of leadership and environmental advocacy. “It’s crucial for me to demonstrate that women can take charge in protecting our planet,” she stated. “As a working mom, I sometimes feel guilty about my career, so I strive to dedicate my energy to causes that truly matter.”
But do these posters exaggerate the potential consequences of inaction? The EPA has provided alarming projections regarding greenhouse gas emissions, indicating that the Earth’s temperature has already increased by 1.5°F over the past century. If we do not implement significant changes, temperatures could climb by up to 12°F by the end of this century. For every 2°F rise, Arctic sea ice is expected to decline by 15%. Furthermore, sea levels could rise between 1 to 4 feet, which would profoundly alter coastlines across the United States.
It is imperative that we do not diminish environmental protections, slash the EPA’s budget by 31%, or withdraw from international agreements like the Paris Accord—initiatives aimed at combating climate change. Instead, we must take global warming seriously and make personal commitments to reduce our carbon footprint. Failing to do so could make Greenway Creative’s dystopian visions a reality.
