In our household, my partner and I aren’t exactly swimming in wealth. There’s no treasure trove of gold coins waiting for us to dive into, reminiscent of Scrooge McDuck. We do make it a point to take at least one family vacation each summer, yet the expenses associated with travel, dining, and accommodations can quickly escalate, leading to stress and disagreements. Instead, we have opted for a more economical and infinitely more enjoyable option for our young children: camping.
Admittedly, camping isn’t my first choice. Last year, I had a particularly restless night due to a creature rummaging around our tent right next to me. And let’s not even get started on the bugs and lukewarm coffee. However, my kids? They absolutely adore it. Their enthusiasm transforms camping into the ideal summer retreat.
At home, my children are typically not allowed to play in dirt or throw stones, but once we’re out in nature, I let them revel in the freedom of the outdoors. My kids thrive on running wild outside, which is basically the essence of camping. There’s no room for me to say, “Come inside and wash up.” When we’re camping, they can get as muddy and messy as they wish — a dream come true for any child, right?
Their household chores include making beds, sweeping floors, and taking out the trash. However, camping transforms these tasks into exciting adventures! Taking out the trash means strolling to the nearest dumpster, making their bed consists of merely straightening their sleeping bags, and sweeping? Not necessary! They also gain new responsibilities, like gathering sticks for the evening fire, hanging their swimsuits on trees to dry after a swim, and getting out marshmallows for dessert. Every small task is an exhilarating experience for them.
Speaking of marshmallows, the food is perhaps the most thrilling aspect for kids. I don’t even attempt to serve any “unpleasant” casseroles in the wilderness. Instead, it’s all about hot dogs piled high with mustard, an array of chips, and, of course, s’mores.
Camping offers a fantastic opportunity to disconnect from technology. Even the most dedicated parents often find their children spending considerable time glued to screens, but when surrounded by trees and dirt, they are drawn into exploration. Their primary responsibility during our vacation is simply to enjoy themselves — skipping stones, discovering unusual insects, splashing in the lake, playing Frisbee, and reading by flashlight. It’s a continuous stream of fun because they’re engaging in activities they rarely experience at home. Isn’t that the true essence of a vacation? To break free from daily routines and embrace the extraordinary?
Despite financial constraints, my kids never feel deprived during these trips. They eagerly anticipate our camping adventures, counting down the days with excitement. While I hope to treat them to more extravagant vacations in the future, such as trips to Disney World or the Grand Canyon, I also hope we always reserve time in our summers for camping. Cozy nights by the campfire, waking up to crisp morning air, and indulging in chocolate and graham crackers are nourishing for the soul and create memories that last a lifetime.
