How the Nesting Urge Transformed Me into a Senior Citizen

We’ve all heard about the nesting instinct that kicks in for many pregnant women as they prepare for their baby’s arrival. You know, the overwhelming desire to clean, organize, and create a cozy nursery? Well, my experience took an unexpected turn. Instead of sprucing up the house, I found myself in a whirlwind of activities usually associated with retirees—like knitting, sewing, and scrapbooking!

My Knitting Journey

My knitting journey didn’t go as planned, despite my friend’s dedicated attempts to teach me. The rhythmic click of the needles was oddly soothing, but I often spaced out and lost track of where I was, leading to a tangled mess of yarn and dropped stitches. My grand accomplishment? A very narrow scarf and what might qualify as a potholder for a doll.

Sewing Success

Sewing turned out to be slightly more successful. My mom, a quilting pro, would have loved to teach me, but she lives far away. So, I ventured into a local fabric store and bumped into Irene, a lovely older lady who took a break from crafting a princess costume for her granddaughter to help me make a simple quilt for my baby. With three colors and three rows of squares, it was pretty basic. I could sense Irene’s disappointment that I wasn’t more adventurous with embroidery or elaborate designs, but honestly, I found sewing a bit tedious and was glad to let her take the reins.

Scrapbooking Adventures

Next on my agenda was scrapbooking, or more accurately, designing my baby’s birth announcements. I’m much more at ease with paper and ink than with yarn and fabric. Armed with card stock, pastel ribbons, and cute baby-shaped hole punches, I set out to create a dozen announcements, leaving spaces for the name, date, weight, and photo. I couldn’t wait to finalize them once my little one arrived—though I soon found myself too busy to even stamp the envelopes!

The Arrival

Thank goodness my baby decided to make an appearance—10 days late, no less—because I was running out of projects to tackle. Who knows what I might have taken up next? Maybe elaborate Jell-O molds or even shuffleboard. Whatever it was, I bet Irene and her friends would have had plenty of tips to share.
