In the wake of recent events, I found myself unexpectedly drawn to dancing as a form of release. It’s astonishing how much news and negativity one can absorb in a single day before feeling the need to recharge. I wouldn’t consider myself a naturally optimistic person; in fact, I often find myself rolling my eyes at overly cheerful establishments on Wednesdays. Setting low expectations allows me to find joy in even the most mediocre outcomes. Yet, there’s something about dancing that speaks to me—even if my moves are far from graceful.

Flashback to age ten: I was the kid lip-syncing to Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” in front of my classmates, donning a black outfit, a less-than-flattering perm, and oversized red glasses. That performance was the pinnacle of my childhood, and I’ve been chasing that high ever since, albeit with a touch of bitterness for still being relatively unknown at 35.

Given my penchant for dancing and the current state of the world, I feel an irresistible urge to let loose. When I express my desire to dance to friends, I’m only half-joking. I want to break out the Cabbage Patch and the Hammer—not the dab or any synchronized line dances. The Cupid Shuffle feels more like a math problem for your feet, and I certainly didn’t spend four years dodging math in college just to let that nonsense spill onto the dance floor.

After the election, feeling defeated by an unexpected political outcome, I made the choice to turn up the music. I dubbed my nightly music sessions “The ResistDANCE.”

Can you truly hold onto anger while listening to ’90s ska? Or when Sisqó croons about thongs? It’s hard not to feel invigorated when the Spice Girls start playing. My evenings have transformed into a personal Richard Simmons workout session, where I dance to whatever makes me feel good, steering clear of anything that might bring me down.

In the spirit of sharing, I’m excited to introduce a new musical segment for our community. Every other Friday, we’ll unveil a fresh ResistDANCE Spotify playlist tailored for the Home Insemination Kit family. Kicking things off is a collection of hip-hop tracks from 1988 to 1992, featuring classics like “I Got a Man” by Positive K, TLC’s “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg,” Kris Kross’s “Jump,” and M.C. Hammer’s “You Can’t Touch This.” I even debated including Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.”

This Bust a Move playlist spans over 90 minutes of nostalgic beats perfect for when you need a break from reality, reminiscent of those carefree roller skating nights from middle school. If you have suggestions for future playlists, feel free to connect with me on social media!

In summary, the ResistDANCE is all about embracing joy through music and movement, offering a much-needed escape from the heaviness of everyday life while keeping the spirit alive.
