I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has played a role in supporting my child with food allergies. Many of you are parents who face similar challenges, while others have friends, family members, or colleagues dealing with food allergies. Some of you are educators or caregivers, while others may not know my child personally but still contribute to his safety.
Your kindness and understanding have made a significant impact on our lives. You recognize that a child’s safety is paramount and empathize with the challenges we navigate in a world filled with allergens. You refrain from making insensitive jokes about food allergies and actively stand against bullying of any child, including mine.
Your support comes in countless forms. You ensure that my son, who is allergic to nuts, is kept safe by not offering him food or drinks that could harm him. You wash your hands upon arriving at our home, honoring our family’s needs and wishes. You vigilantly watch over him at school and during playtime, sending me valuable information about food allergies and advocating for research to find a cure.
Your actions give us hope and reassurance. You choose to walk alongside us on this often daunting journey, knowing we would do the same for your child. You understand that keeping children safe from potential allergens is a small sacrifice compared to the value of their health and well-being. You acknowledge that my son is still learning how to manage his food allergies, and that young children require considerable support to make safe choices.
You approach our situation with empathy, avoiding judgment or negative comments because you comprehend that food allergies are not chosen; they can affect anyone at any time. With millions of individuals, including 15 million Americans, living with food allergies, you have educated yourself on symptoms and the use of epinephrine auto-injectors.
You are aware of the tragic stories of children who have lost their lives due to food allergies. I carry those memories with me daily, fearing for my child’s safety. You know how my son experienced his first anaphylactic reaction at just four years old, and you understand the fear that still lingers in my heart. The haunting memories of watching him struggle for breath due to his reactions, compounded by asthma, are ever-present.
When I look at my son, I still see the infant I held in my arms, and I will always love and protect him, no matter how grown he becomes. He is a boy with food allergies, deserving of the same protection and care we would extend to any child.
Thank you for your ability to empathize and recognize the value of my son’s life, just as you cherish your own child’s well-being. I assure you that I will always do my utmost to protect your child, as well as my son’s friends and classmates. From the depths of my heart, I appreciate your support in helping my child manage his food allergies. I am deeply grateful for individuals like you, and I hope my son is always surrounded by such love. May that love accompany him wherever he goes.
Warm regards,
A Grateful Mother
