I wouldn’t classify myself as a complete mess, yet I’m far from a perfectionist. I’d say I’m “easygoing” when it comes to the state of my home. I appreciate cleanliness and order, but I’ve accepted that it’s not always achievable — and that’s perfectly fine. My husband and I both work from home, and with three kids we homeschool, our living space gets a lot of use, and that’s evident.
However, when someone unfamiliar is coming over, I transform into a whirlwind of activity, akin to a hyper version of a cleaning fairy. I can turn our lived-in space into a presentable area in a matter of moments. This often entails quickly stashing away laundry and paperwork in the bedrooms, along with some urgent requests for my family to pitch in.
If it’s your first visit to my home (assuming you’ve given me some notice), you’ll be welcomed by a living room that looks like it belongs in a magazine, complete with cozy seating and fresh coffee brewing. I can make my home sparkle when I put in the effort.
But honestly, I don’t want to maintain that level of perfection all the time. While I would love to keep my space immaculate, our busy lifestyle makes that nearly impossible without adding excessive stress, which is simply not worth it.
When good friends come over, we tidy up a bit, but we don’t stress about achieving perfection. You might stumble upon a laundry basket full of clothes in the dining area, a Monopoly game paused on the coffee table, some unfinished art projects scattered around, and various papers awaiting my attention.
The floor beneath the dining table likely needs a good sweep, and there may be dishes piled in the sink that didn’t fit in the dishwasher, patiently waiting for their turn. It’s almost guaranteed that there will be shoes in places they shouldn’t be.
If you happen upon such scenes in my home, please take it as a compliment. Seriously.
If I didn’t feel a strong connection with you, I would ensure everything appeared immaculate out of courtesy. Inviting you into our lived-in space signifies that I trust you. It indicates a shared understanding that we don’t need to present our best selves all the time. It reflects a comfort that allows us to be genuine, much like family.
Believe it or not, my laundry baskets symbolize affection. My clutter illustrates care. Those scattered papers mean you’re part of my inner circle.
Should you visit and notice that our home looks like it’s been neglected, rest assured it’s just how we usually are — not quite a scene from a hoarding show, but certainly not fit for HGTV. We cherish you so much that we want you to experience our everyday reality.
So, please view our mess as a genuine expression of friendship. Allowing you into our space is a sign that you are welcomed in our lives at any time.
