It’s an undeniable reality in the realm of parenting: we all have our breaking points. The way we reach these points may vary significantly from one parent to another, but each of us has our own unique threshold for losing composure.

Life’s external pressures—financial strains, relationship challenges, and work-related stressors—often exacerbate our capacity for patience. These challenges aren’t caused by our children, yet they undeniably affect our ability to act with empathy and kindness.

Today was one of those days for me.

After a night of restless sleep, everyone awoke in a foul mood. The baby decided breakfast belonged on the floor, the dog had a mishap, the toddler created a milk puddle, the kitten was nowhere to be found, and my eldest rummaged through her wardrobe, discarding every piece of clothing as “too awful” to wear.

Finally, after a chaotic morning, we managed to get dressed, only for me to discover that my car keys had vanished. As I frantically searched for them, the boys ventured outside to the muddy sandbox, transforming themselves into messes just after I had cleaned them up and right before we needed to leave.

While trying to wrangle them back indoors, my eldest opened the door to a visitor eager to spread religious tidings, allowing the dogs to escape. Amid my attempts to regain control of the situation, the baby, now naked, joined the chaos outside, gleefully scattering his snacks all over the porch.

Once everyone was finally back inside, I assessed the aftermath and realized we wouldn’t make it out the door on time, even if we tried to be fashionably late. The atmosphere was far from conducive for public outings.

To add to the mayhem, I received a call from my husband about a potential issue with our bank account, and I learned that my grandfather was in the hospital. That was the tipping point. I lost my composure. There was yelling, cursing, tears, and doors slamming—certainly not my proudest moment. In frustration, I declared the whole day a write-off.

After such outbursts, guilt often follows. This weight of motherhood can be suffocating. Initially, anger and frustration cloud our minds, but guilt eventually creeps in. We replay our actions, imagining our children’s wide eyes and tears, and our hearts ache. We picture them in the future, recalling moments of a parent who lost their temper, and we hold back tears as we navigate the daily demands of life.

Then, the inevitable happens: everyone refuses to nap, battling it with protests and tantrums. All I wanted was a moment to breathe and regain my sanity. But no naps were on the agenda, and once again, I found myself overwhelmed, feeling the same horrible emotions wash over me. I allowed a few tears to escape as I juggled the responsibilities of ordering takeout, running baths, and locating clean pajamas.

After bath time, we settled down with a story, the children curled on my lap, their heads smelling of their favorite no-tears shampoo. As I read, I was consumed by love for these little beings I created, longing for a fresh start tomorrow—an opportunity to make amends, to fill their day with joy and laughter, and to set aside the worries of life.

We vow to cherish these loved ones, even when they push every button we have. After all, if my partner behaved like this, I’d probably consider tossing all his things out the window.

Looking into my children’s eyes, I offer apologies. We are human, after all, and it’s essential they see that we make mistakes and learn from them. They must understand that vulnerability is part of being human.

Yes, we all have moments of losing our composure. We feel guilty about our reactions, but acknowledging our flaws is part of this journey. Motherhood is a cycle of breakdowns and rebuilds, with each day bringing a chance for renewal. Tomorrow is a new opportunity, and we will all be alright.
