In a troubling incident that has drawn considerable attention, United Airlines has expressed regret after a father was detained for placing his arm over his son’s lap while the child slept during a flight. The father, Mark, was traveling with his five-year-old son, Alex, from New York to North Carolina when a flight attendant raised concerns about the positioning of his hand.
Mark’s partner, David, recounted the situation in a social media post on a platform dedicated to LGBTQ+ parenting. “Just two nights ago, Mark was questioned after we landed, as a flight crew member alleged that his arm resting on our sleeping son’s lap was too close to inappropriate areas,” David shared.
Mark felt humiliated, being treated as if he had committed a crime in front of other passengers, and was held for nearly an hour while United staff conducted inquiries. In the wake of the public outcry, United Airlines released a statement, emphasizing that all customers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. “We have reached out to the affected family and have expressed our sincerest apologies for the distressing situation,” the airline stated.
