Dear precious child,
As I adjusted your bright polka dot curtains and dressed you in your cozy pajamas, we sang our beloved “Twinkle, Twinkle.” However, tonight felt particularly heavy. The weight of closing that curtain felt monumental, and it’s understandable, my dear, because we are embarking on a significant change.
This evening marks the last time I will say, “I’ll see you in the morning” as I gently close this door, the same door that welcomed you into your first bedroom on that unforgettable day we brought you home. It’s the door that has seen countless cherished moments, from your first Christmas to your very first night sleeping independently after co-sleeping. Tonight, it is also the last night you will share a home with both Mom and Dad. It’s a bittersweet moment, and I must share with you that we will no longer be living together. Please know that I am truly sorry for this.
When I shut that door and you called out “Daddy,” my heart shattered just a little more.
I’ve spent many sleepless hours contemplating how to convey this to you in a way that you can grasp, without causing you anxiety. I want you to understand that you are surrounded by an abundance of love from both parents, who are merely moving a short distance apart, but will always remain a part of your life. Yet, I feel a sense of falseness in this situation, as it’s heart-wrenching and painful, and it brings forth feelings of failure as a family. Perhaps I need to confront these feelings myself before explaining it to you.
It may seem as though we have failed. In some respects, we have. However, when viewed from a broader perspective, we haven’t truly failed. We can’t fail because you, my darling, are the constant in our lives that we will always fight for.
Mommy made this decision out of love for all of us because we each deserve happiness, respect, and peace. I refuse to perpetuate negative patterns and wish to show you what genuine love looks like—love that is not merely a facade for the sake of societal expectations. I want to be real and honest, which, unfortunately, sometimes calls for making difficult choices that can ultimately foster growth for us as individuals and as a family.
Our identities as individuals directly influence our roles as parents. I am committed to becoming the best version of myself for you, showing you that what is right isn’t always the easiest path to take. I want you to know that you should never settle for anything less than what honors your true self and worth.
Sweet dreams, my little one. May your dreams be filled with the innocence of childhood, whether you are at Mom’s or Dad’s. Regardless of your surroundings, remember that love encompasses you.
