Honest Review: My Experience with LipSense

A close friend of mine recently ventured into selling LipSense, so naturally, I was invited to join her sales group on Facebook. As a supportive friend, I decided to take a look at what she was promoting.

Makeup has never really been my forte; I’m more inclined towards lip gloss or balm. Lipstick often feels like too bold a statement for my taste, so I tend to stick to the most sheer or nude shades available. Therefore, when I first heard about LipSense, I wasn’t particularly interested, especially after discovering the starting price of $55 for one lip color and a gloss. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the cost.

For someone who is only mildly curious about lipstick, that price felt excessive. LipSense operates as a multi-level marketing (MLM) brand, which means you’re likely to see a plethora of sales pitches, images, and tutorials flooding your social media feeds. If that’s not your vibe, I totally understand. Thankfully, my friend kept it low-key, inviting me to try it out without any sales pressure, which made me more willing to give it a chance.

The main selling point of LipSense is its impressive smudge-proof formula that doesn’t budge until you decide to remove it. If you’ve watched any of the marketing videos, you’ve likely seen sellers rubbing their lips and showing off clean fingers. While those clips can be a bit over the top, I can confirm that the lipstick truly stays put. After going through the application process, it better not come off easily!

At first glance, the application method seems complicated. You need to apply three layers of color, allowing each layer a few moments to dry before sealing it with gloss. If you happen to color outside the lines (like I did), you’ll need to buy their specialized remover, which, of course, adds to the expense.

This isn’t a quick product to use; I wouldn’t recommend applying it in a hurry or in front of others. It’s not the kind of lipstick for an “oops, I need to look better” moment. Instead, it requires a conscious commitment to wear it throughout the day since removal is just as involved as the application. Initially, the lipstick made my lips feel dry—likely due to the high alcohol content—but the gloss helped mitigate that discomfort. You’ll probably find yourself reapplying the gloss frequently to counteract the dryness, and it’s thick, so use it sparingly. Be prepared to restock your gloss regularly.

There are around 36 shades available at any time, with some discontinued colors fetching high prices on platforms like eBay. It’s surprising what people will pay for lipstick! As someone who prefers more neutral tones, I immediately dismissed about 75% of the colors. However, I did find a nude shade that I didn’t mind. For those with deeper skin tones like mine, finding a flattering nude can be tricky, but “Bella,” a best-seller, was decent—though I wished it was a touch darker.

I was convinced to try a few other shades, agreeing only if I could remove them right after. “Mauve Ice” was nice, but a bit too frosty for my complexion, so we layered it with “Purple Reign,” which is quite bold. I’m not a fan of vibrant colors, and this purple was certainly a stretch for me. While the combination made me look more like I had been indulging in a grape lollipop rather than getting punched in the mouth, I was eager to remove it as soon as we snapped a picture. I recommend using a thicker remover like coconut oil, as the removal process is as tedious as putting it on.

In conclusion, while I won’t be investing in LipSense anytime soon due to the price and application time, it’s by no means a bad product. I still firmly identify with the “Team No Lipstick” crowd, but I’m grateful that my friend took the time to show me the ropes without any pressure. It may take a while before I consider a $55 lip kit again, but I’m still on the lookout for my ideal shades.

Summary:

In this review, I shared my experience trying LipSense, a long-lasting lipstick that offers a smudge-proof formula but comes with a steep price and a complicated application process. While I found a couple of shades that I liked, I remain unconvinced about investing in such a product due to the commitment it requires.
