You Have Every Right to Embrace Your Best Life—Here’s How

Let me tell you about my friend, Jane. She’s into some seriously impressive yoga—think hanging-from-the-ceiling kind of yoga. She shares stunning pictures of herself practicing outdoors in the spring, in striking black-and-white settings inside her cozy home, and on her charming porch. She runs marathons and confidently rocks a bikini. Oh, and did I mention she’s a single mom to teenagers and has a Diet Coke addiction?

Jane is stunning—not just in the conventional sense, though she certainly is that. She radiates soul-deep beauty because she’s fully committed to living her best life, and she absolutely deserves it. She does all these things without a care for what anyone else thinks.

Then there’s my friend, Sarah, who has a lively 3-year-old. She’s all about those twirly dresses and is, in her own words, the “queen of fried food,” though she modestly brushes off the title. With dreams of a fully pink kitchen and a pantry always stocked with chocolate chip cookie ingredients, she even relocated across the country so her son could be close to his dad.

Sarah is beautiful in every way, too—not just on the surface. She embodies soul beauty, living her best life unapologetically, just like Jane. Both women face significant challenges—like being single parents with their fair share of worries. Life isn’t always a walk in the park; it includes sleepless nights, messes to clean up, and the chaos of texting teens. But here’s the thing: they know they can either dwell in those challenging times or actively create their own joyful moments, regardless of the world’s opinions.

And guess what? You deserve to create joyful moments too. You are an extraordinary human being—just like me, just like them. We all have the right to carve out our best lives right where we are. Waiting for the “perfect” moment is a fool’s errand; there will always be something holding us back if we let it.

There’s always that nagging voice—whether it’s from others or our own minds—telling us we aren’t worthy, or good enough, or that we’re just being silly. But we can channel our strength, push through, and do our thing anyway. That’s why I decided to buy myself some fabulous tutus.

I’ve always wanted a tutu. After dealing with some tough body-image feelings, I realized I didn’t want to feel that way anymore. So, I ordered a few tutus, even though I’ve never danced a day in my life. I bought them because I absolutely love them.

When they arrived, I was over the moon. These fluffy, tulle creations are perfect to pair with a tank top and sandals. Watch out, world—I’m strutting into Target in my tutu!

The other day, as I loaded my kids into the car, I blasted the Hamilton soundtrack. My boys joined in, singing softly at first. I told them the only way to sing is to belt it out as loud as you can, and that’s exactly what we did. We sped down the highway, belting out those lyrics, even the not-so-kid-friendly parts.

I’ve also taken to carrying vintage handkerchiefs in my purse and catching bugs with my kids instead of screaming at them. I’ve been training my German shepherd and rescuing old blankets from thrift shops. I spend time doing crafts with my kids rather than just overseeing them. Sure, these things might take longer, but the joy they bring makes it all worthwhile. The tutus, the loud singing, and the freedom from caring about judgment all contribute to my best life.

You can live your best life too. You absolutely deserve it! Not sure where to begin? Find something quirky that brings you joy. Maybe it’s those knee-high gladiator sandals you’ve been eyeing, or a crop top, or even something as simple as a vibrant lipstick. Perhaps it’s thrifting for adorable outfits for your kids at a bargain. Or maybe it’s unleashing your creativity through art with your little ones. Draw a fish, a tree, or whatever comes to your mind. Make it beautiful.

If you think you can’t draw or craft, you’re missing the point. This is about embracing happiness and living life to the fullest—not about achieving perfection. Maybe your best self craves a solo vacation, even if it’s just across town for a day. Maybe it’s building a sandcastle or baking brownies. No judgment here; just do you. Make sure it’s genuinely you, not something others expect of you.

Whatever it is, do something that ignites your happiness. Do something that fills you with pride. Embrace the unique person you are. It may not align with what everyone else is doing, and that’s absolutely fine. After all, not everyone practices ceiling yoga, hoards cookie ingredients, or wears tutus. But those of us who do? We’re living our best lives right now, amidst the chaos and messiness, and we’re loving every minute of it.
