In our latest feature, we’re diving into the lives of remarkable mothers who are making waves in the business world. This time, we chatted with Sarah Thompson, the Co-Founder and Head of Business Development at Fashion Forward Rentals, who offers insight into juggling motherhood and entrepreneurship.

With a 17-month-old daughter in tow, how does Sarah manage to balance family life with her business responsibilities? “I’ve learned to give myself some grace and accept that perfect balance is a myth,” she shares. “We all have our moments, and sometimes you just have to do your best.” Living close to the office has its perks, as it saves Sarah a significant hour of commute time each day—time she can spend with her little one. Plus, her nanny occasionally brings her daughter into the office, which adds a fun and personal touch to the workday. “It’s a blend of being a mom and a businesswoman, and I love that my two worlds can come together,” she adds.

The Inspiration Behind Fashion Forward Rentals

So, what sparked the idea for Fashion Forward Rentals? Sarah co-founded the company with her business partner, Emma Clarke, right out of Harvard Business School. “Back in 2008, we noticed a massive shift in retail due to the recession,” she explained. “Women were becoming more budget-conscious, but they still wanted to enjoy fashion. That’s when we realized we could help them tackle the ‘closet full of clothes but nothing to wear’ dilemma, all while being financially savvy.”

To test their concept, Sarah and Emma conducted initial trials on college campuses, which proved invaluable. “We observed how college students interacted socially and shared clothes. As they posted their outfits on social media, they didn’t want to repeat looks, making Rent the Runway a perfect fit for them.” They developed a network of over 1,500 brand ambassadors across 200 campuses, turning Fashion Forward Rentals into a lifestyle choice for young women who love high-end fashion without the hefty price tag.
