When it comes to parenting, one thing is certain: moms have always leaned on each other for support. Nowadays, the Internet has become a vital tool for mothers, allowing them to connect through online communities where they can share their parenting challenges and offer each other encouragement.
A recent study from the University of Missouri highlights how these online spaces serve as a platform for mothers to discuss their concerns. According to Dr. Amy Carter, a co-author of the study and a professor in the Department of Child Development, “Moms often have feelings they might hesitate to share in person. They may feel guilty about expressing thoughts like, ‘My child is driving me crazy,’ or ‘This is overwhelming.’ On message boards, they can use pseudonyms to openly express their feelings and receive emotional support and advice from others in similar situations.”
Dr. Carter and her colleague, Jenna Brooks, observed discussions on popular parenting forums, analyzing over 100 posts from mothers of children aged two and under. They discovered that topics such as feeding, sleep issues, developmental milestones, and discipline were the most commonly discussed, reflecting the real-life challenges moms face every day.
“The great thing about message boards is that they’re always available, allowing parents to connect at any time,” Dr. Carter noted. “Many moms seek quick feedback from their peers instead of waiting for appointments with healthcare professionals. The high costs of medical care and long wait times are leading mothers to seek practical advice online.” It’s important to remember, though, that the insights shared on these boards are often anecdotal and based on personal experiences.
What drives the popularity of these online communities? One factor is the increasing mobility of families. Dr. Carter explains, “Women aren’t always nearby their own mothers for parenting advice anymore, so they turn to their peers on the Internet.”
