Thanks to the quirky crew known as the Merb’ys, 2018 is shaping up to be quite fabulous! The Merb’ys calendar, a brainchild of the Newfoundland and Labrador Beard and Moustache Society, was inspired by a friend’s playful merman-themed dudeoir post on social media. Hasan Ray, the mastermind behind the idea, thought a calendar would be a fun way to get the club involved.
These guys, embodying a fun mix of mermen and teddy bears, might just make you want to part with your clamshells! The icing on the cake? All proceeds from the calendar sales go to Spirit Horse NL, an organization dedicated to improving mental health and life skills through therapeutic horse interactions for youth and families. Now, that’s a cause worth supporting!
It’s often tough to get the “too cool for school” guy to smile in photos, but Ray had no issue rallying volunteers to don fins and flower crowns. After a call for models went out, over 70 bearded gentlemen jumped at the chance to participate. Kudos, Canada!
Despite their newfound fame, the Merb’ys are keeping their feet on the ground. “I’m blown away by the response,” said Ray. “We expected some local coverage, maybe a bit of national attention, but to reach an international audience is just beyond anything we dreamed of! The whimsical nature of the calendar has really resonated with people.”
