Attention, fellow crafters! The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF) are calling on your knitting and crocheting skills for a heartfelt initiative this February. They need thousands of adorable little red hats for newborns as part of their “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign. So, if you’ve got some free time and a passion for knitting, now’s the perfect moment to whip up some tiny hats that promote heart health and raise awareness about congenital heart defects.
February: A Month of Love and Awareness
Did you know February is not just the month of love? It’s also American Heart Month! This makes it an ideal time to educate families about heart-healthy living and the impact of congenital heart defects, which affect around 40,000 babies in the U.S. each year. The AHA’s Healthy For Good campaign is all about encouraging families to eat well, stay active, and prioritize their health. And while we’re on the topic of hacks, those are always welcome in our lives!
How You Can Help
Every baby born in February at participating hospitals will receive a handmade hat from the Little Hats, Big Hearts project. This initiative began in Chicago back in 2014 with just 300 hats and has since grown to include hospitals in 40 states!
Not a knitting whiz? No worries! You can still contribute by donating red yarn. The guidelines are simple: make sure it’s medium to heavy weight, cotton or acrylic, and machine washable. The AHA also provides six different hat patterns on their website, but if you prefer to use your own, just keep it simple—no buttons or bows that could be choking hazards.
Where to Send Your Creations
