Breastfeeding has truly been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey into motherhood, but it’s also brought along some unexpected twists. My little one has thrived, I’ve shed some of the baby weight, and I even got a little boost in the cleavage department—who knew? Yet, nursing my baby at eight months is a whole different ball game compared to those serene newborn days.
I fondly remember those early nursing sessions—quiet, peaceful moments where my baby was snugly swaddled and content just being close to me. There were times I even dozed off! But fast forward to now, and breastfeeding has morphed into a lively adventure with its own set of challenges. Here are three changes that took me by surprise:
1. Say Hello to Niplash!
What’s niplash, you ask? Picture this: you’re nursing in a calm room, and your partner walks in looking fantastic. You turn to check him out, and guess what? Baby turns, too, while still latched on. Yep, that’s niplash for you!
2. Teething Trouble
Remember when everyone said babies usually get their first teeth around six months? Well, my little guy decided to break that rule and popped out two teeth at four months. Now at eight months, he’s working on his seventh! Thankfully, biting hasn’t been a huge issue, but I’ve had my moments of panic thinking he might just take a chunk out of me. I’ve learned to be quick on the draw—when he starts to get cranky or teethy, my finger goes in to help him unlatch!
3. He’s Got His Eyes on the Prize
This hasn’t become a huge issue yet, but I can see it on the horizon. My little munchkin has figured out that under my shirt is where his favorite meal is. So now, he’s trying to tug on my V-neck or unbutton my shirt when I least expect it. It’s amusing, but you definitely have to be ready for action, whether you’re at the grocery store or at a family gathering!
At the end of the day, my mindset is still the same as it was on day one: breastfeeding is a wild ride. Each stage brings its own quirks and challenges, but they’re all manageable. You adapt, you find the humor in it, and you keep going. I’m aiming to breastfeed for a year or longer, so I know my list of surprises will only grow!
