I Want to Be a Bold and Spirited Elder

Ah, the days of being thirteen. One lazy afternoon, my two best friends and I made a pact that felt monumental. We perched ourselves on the rocks outside my parents’ house, caught in that awkward phase between the age of Barbies and the freedom we craved. We promised that when we finally got to really live our lives — because surely, there had to be more to existence than being a teenager — we would embrace every wild moment. And even when we became old ladies — especially then! — we vowed we wouldn’t turn into our grandmothers. No way would we be those ladies in frumpy clothes, glued to daytime TV, cooking pot roast, and knitting sweaters.

We were determined to live life to the fullest. We envisioned ourselves as wild, rambunctious, and maybe a bit unruly grandmas. We’d be free to act however we pleased, with no judgment or scolding for our antics. When those guys told us to smile, we’d just flip them the bird.

We imagined donning rainbow pants, belting out Guns N’ Roses in dive bars, sipping whiskey on the rocks, and flashing our 80-year-old selves at passing cars. Staying up all night for video games and junk food? Absolutely. Carrot cake for dinner? Why not! We’d date younger men and shock our grandkids. We would be vibrant and vivacious, living life to the max.

Fast forward to now, and I still have my partners in crime, Amy and Sarah. We often reminisce about those dreams, but life has shifted — motherhood has us in its grips, and suddenly, it feels a bit less like rock ‘n’ roll and more like navigating bedtime battles and dealing with sassy tweens.

Yet, every time we manage to sneak away for a drink and a good chat, we reaffirm our excitement for the future. We remind each other that when the time comes to truly live again — and there must be more to life beyond being a mom — we’ll dive in headfirst. We’ll rock (faux) fur coats and seek out fancy experiences, get wild tattoos, and maybe even sneak into hotel pools for a midnight swim. We’ll be the grandmas who take the kids on the craziest rides, jump out of planes, and throw raucous parties in our retirement homes. And sure, if we want to wear our bras on the outside, who’s gonna stop us?

We dream of a future where the judgment of the PTA is a distant memory, where the focus is on our friendships and loved ones. By then, I’ll have done my job as a mom, and the ones who matter will be right there beside me.

Little by little, my inner wild woman is breaking free. With each passing year, I care less about the trivial stuff. The more wrinkles I earn, the freer I feel as a woman. So, if you see me in my SUV, car seats in the back, my lacy bra peeking out, belting out “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” just know I’m prepping for a future where I’m that grandma who lives life unapologetically.

Let’s all embrace the idea of being spirited old ladies. It sounds way more exciting than watching The Price is Right.
