Hey there, friends! I’ve always been reminded of a saying: “I don’t believe in miracles; I rely on them.” This has resonated with me through many situations in my life, from unexpected turns to moments of healing. But it wasn’t until my little one arrived that I truly grasped the miracle of community.
For those not familiar with our journey, I’m Jamie, and just days before my son was born, we were blissfully unaware that anything was amiss. As someone who leans towards nature and organic living, I opted for midwifery and home birth, sticking to minimal medical intervention. I felt prepared, having regular check-ups with my OB, and everything seemed fine.
However, at 41 weeks and a few days, we went in for a routine ultrasound. To our shock, we discovered limb anomalies and that our baby was breech! With the birth tub ready and my playlist set, I suddenly found myself heading for a C-section instead of my planned home birth.
When my son, Leo, made his entrance into the world, we learned he was healthy in many ways—strong lungs and a good heart—but he had not developed his legs or his left arm. His right arm was there, but the bones in his hand were fused. While I could share the emotional rollercoaster of fear and guilt, that’s not the focus of this story. Instead, it’s about how our challenges opened the door to an incredible community.
When I called for help, I didn’t realize how profoundly that simple act would resonate. My wish was for everyone around Leo to shower him with the same love we felt, and it was answered in ways I could never have imagined. As a yoga instructor deeply committed to community, I’ve seen the magic that unfolds when we come together.
Since Leo’s arrival, he’s taught us all about the transformative power of love. The community rallied around us, and within days, we reached over $50,000 through our GoFundMe to support his needs. We received diapers, therapy services, and countless prayers. Friends organized sound healing sessions, while one kind farmer’s wife offered to introduce him at her church for blessings. Packages with clothes and gifts arrived at our doorstep, and even strangers poured in with hugs and encouragement, reminding us that kindness and goodness still thrive.
Through it all, I realized that we’re all in this together. Leo, like all of us, needs reminders of love and support. He needs to know he is whole and cherished. It has become clear that we each have special gifts to share, and I’m grateful for all the love we’ve received.
Now, I’m reaching out once more. It’s easy to slide back into habits of doubt and blame when things don’t go as planned. Leo has shown me the importance of vulnerability and asking for help. It’s a gift we can give ourselves and each other. We often hide behind a facade of having it all together, but what if we opened up more? What if we admitted when we need each other?
This holiday season, let’s celebrate authenticity and the joy of community. From my family to yours, thank you for being part of our journey.
