For many new parents, the second most exciting arrival, right after their little one, is an unassuming cardboard box. These “baby boxes,” filled with essential items such as gender-neutral outfits, winter clothing, diapers, and bathing supplies, have been distributed to new parents by the Finnish government for over 75 years. Recently, this concept has blossomed into a thriving business, exemplified by the trio behind Finnish Baby Box, who are sending their packages across the globe.
Meet Matti Lahtinen, Jari Koskinen, and Tomi Rantanen, a group of engineers and suburban dads from Helsinki. Realizing that the official Finnish baby boxes couldn’t be shipped internationally, they took it upon themselves to create a version that could. Priced around 400 euros (approximately $450), these boxes also include valuable items for parents, such as nursing pads. According to Lahtinen, the bedding supplies within the box serve as “the perfect first bed for the baby.” Plus, they customize the contents to suit different climates. “We learned not to send snowsuits to Australia anymore,” Koskinen shared with a chuckle.
The kits contribute to Finland’s reputation as one of the top three countries globally for maternal and child welfare. Interestingly, the Finnish Social Security service even gifted a baby box to Prince William and Kate Middleton after the birth of George, and Rantanen mentioned they plan to send one for baby Charlotte as well.
This trend isn’t just limited to Finland. Companies like The Baby Box Co. in the U.S. and Baby Box Company in the UK have also jumped on board, offering new parents around the world easy access to these convenient starter kits.
