“The triangle always tasted better than the rectangle.” This tweet from a British nightclub sparked a wild debate about the best way to cut toast, leaving Twitter users divided and baffled.
It all kicked off when Hallamnation, a party spot for college students at Sheffield Hallam University in South Yorkshire, asked, “How should we serve your toast at the end of the night?!” Honestly, who wouldn’t want toast after a night of dancing? It’s a tradition the U.S. should totally adopt! They even shared a photo showing three different ways to slice toast.
Clearly, the first option was the favorite among many, but our U.S.-based crew had never encountered the second option before. Seriously, we were shocked! We always thought cutting toast down the middle was the norm, which is what toast #3 represents here. But it turns out our friends across the pond are all about that toast #2 life, and they think we’re a bit off for even considering the vertical cut.
You thought we were exaggerating? Nope! One guy was so incensed by the thought of people liking the third option that he couldn’t stop tweeting about it. Others jumped in, declaring that toast #2 isn’t cool—much less common in the U.S. And then there were those like me who would rather have toast #1 or skip it altogether.
Despite the chaos, there was a good cause behind the whole toast debate. A Hallamnation representative shared with BuzzFeed that they raise funds for The Children’s Hospital Charity by serving toast at their events. “We have collection buckets for Sheffield’s Children’s Charity and ask for a donation in exchange for a slice of toast,” they explained. “The event has gained popularity over the past four years among students.” Unfortunately, Hallamnation didn’t respond when we asked about their preferred toast slicing style.
