Recently, while browsing through social media, I stumbled upon yet another article that annoyed me to no end. As a writer, I strive to maintain an open perspective, but the title “50 Things No Woman Over 40 Should Own” immediately made me want to dismiss it.
As a woman in my 40s, I can relate to what many others in this age group say: this is the decade when everything falls into place, and we finally stop worrying about what others think, embracing the freedom to express ourselves. Sure, we can be sensitive to comments that suggest we’re too old for certain styles, but does that deter us? Absolutely not.
The list in that article suggested women over 40 should abandon items like inexpensive jewelry, miniskirts, ripped jeans, sweatpants (seriously?), bomber jackets, and sequins. Have these folks not seen how fantastic a 40-year-old can look in a miniskirt? Trust me, I’ll continue to rock my sequined tops paired with ripped jeans until I’m 80—thank you very much.
I’m fed up with articles that attempt to dictate what women of a certain age should wear. This kind of messaging suggests that we have an expiration date, and that once we hit 40, some fashion choices are simply off-limits. In reality, many of us feel just the opposite.
Women who’ve navigated four decades of life—raising kids, experiencing marriage, navigating divorce, or overcoming personal challenges—often have little patience for arbitrary fashion rules. They cherish the simple joys in life, like rocking a short skirt that makes them feel fabulous or donning a bomber jacket that brings back fond memories.
Most importantly, comfort is key. Who would willingly give up their beloved sweatpants? My friends and I, all in our mid-40s, know what makes us feel good and we refuse to be told otherwise. We still enjoy our favorite outfits just like we did in our 20s and 30s, and we won’t shy away from wearing what brings us joy simply because we’ve gained a few years.
Fashion rules are constraining, and we’ve got enough rules to follow in life. Dressing is a personal form of expression—no one knows your style better than you do. Suggesting that a woman should avoid certain clothing because of her age is not just insulting; it implies that our choices somehow reflect our ability to “pull it off.”
Our bodies may change, but that shouldn’t limit our wardrobe. In fact, many women find that they feel better than ever in their 40s, and there’s no cap on feeling fabulous. Whether it’s trying out over-the-knee boots or experimenting with colorful hair streaks, we have the right to express ourselves however we choose.
I could stroll through the grocery store in a tiara and bathrobe if I wanted, because I’ve earned that right, and so have you.

In summary, it’s time to stop telling women over 40 what they should wear. Fashion is personal, and every woman has the right to choose her style without judgment. Embrace your individuality and wear what makes you feel good, regardless of age.
