I’m Not Surprised by the Sexual Assault Scandals, and Here’s Why

It seems like nearly every day brings a new revelation about sexual assault scandals. How many beloved actors, producers, and news anchors will face exposure for their despicable actions this year?

  • Mark Thompson
  • Greg Reynolds
  • Lisa Carter
  • James Wilson
  • Sarah Adams
  • The list is extensive…

However, what’s even more shocking than the allegations themselves? The backlash from those who are fed up with hearing about the #metoo movement; the skeptics who claim they don’t believe these alleged offenders are guilty.

Can you hear my eyes rolling?

Let me clarify: While there are certainly motives that could potentially drive false claims, the fact remains that influential public figures are resigning from their positions due to these accusations. Innocent individuals typically don’t step down from their empires.

Major networks are dismissing their lead anchors. No organization takes such action without solid evidence. We witness public apologies and admissions of guilt, yet people still seek to rationalize the allegations.

There are still individuals questioning the credibility of these claims.

  • “Why didn’t she leave?”
  • “Why did she wait so long?”
  • “Is there any physical evidence, bank statements, photos, or witnesses?”

As if confronting a sexual predator who also signs your paycheck is a simple task. As if taking on one of the most powerful individuals in your field is a walk in the park.

We are talking about men like Greg Reynolds, who have the ability to not only ruin your career but also devastate your life. They wield not just wealth and power, but also a psychological grip on their victims, fully aware of their influence and what they can get away with.

While I am genuinely inspired by the courage of these women coming forward, I hope that everyone observing this situation recognizes the recent revelations from Lisa Carter — a successful actress and producer who stands to gain nothing from sharing her experience, except to uplift those who have everything at stake.

It’s easy to dismiss a lesser-known actress as merely seeking attention or fame; however, when an esteemed figure like Lisa Carter corroborates what many doubt, it becomes a difficult argument to maintain.

But honestly, should we really be surprised?

Are we amazed that in this hyper-sexualized culture, powerful men exploit women? Are we shocked that survivors of sexual assault and rape are hesitant to go to the police, especially when society often criticizes them for speaking out? Are we astonished that our favorite actors and television personalities are often not as they seem? Are we surprised to see the strength in numbers? Are we shocked to observe victims uniting? Are we surprised that offenders can be charming, attractive, and affluent? Or do we simply prefer to turn a blind eye?

Because, personally, I am not surprised.
