The largest protest in U.S. history is making a comeback. Almost a year ago, nearly 5 million women united across the globe to advocate for reproductive rights, equal pay, workplace safety, and more. They stood against racism, sexism, and harassment, as well as the policies of the newly inaugurated president, who many viewed as anti-LGBT, anti-women, and racist.
The flagship event occurred in Washington, D.C., where around 500,000 participants gathered, while millions more took part in marches in cities across America and worldwide. This made the inaugural Women’s March the most significant single-day protest in U.S. history, and organizers believe it was just the beginning.
“This year, we’ve mobilized, marched, held town halls, and encouraged each other to run for office in unprecedented numbers,” said Laura Jensen, a co-organizer of last year’s event, in an interview with the Daily Chronicle. “All this effort is converging on the anniversary of the Women’s March, allowing us to transform the collective energy we felt on January 21st into political momentum.”
Scheduled for January 21, this year’s Women’s March will take place in Las Vegas, although New York City and Washington, D.C., are also expected to draw large crowds. The theme for 2018 is “Power to the Polls,” with Las Vegas chosen for its significance as a key swing state in the upcoming midterm elections. The focus this year is to encourage more women to exercise their voting rights in the midterms and beyond.
“The core message of the Women’s March is for women to reclaim control over their lives,” Jensen emphasized. “We are the leaders we’ve been waiting for. It’s time to step up.”
For those interested in participating, the Las Vegas event kicks off at 10 a.m. at Sam Boyd Stadium and will feature performances from artists like Faith Evans and speeches from notable figures such as activist Sarah Mitchell and actress Emily Stone. The entire event will be live-streamed on the Women’s March website, ensuring that those unable to attend in person can still engage.
