Visual artist and photographer, Alex Nader, is making waves with his thought-provoking series that reimagines vintage advertisements by swapping gender roles. The project, titled “In a Different Reality,” explores the absurdity of how society has historically portrayed women, and in doing so, provides a fresh perspective on current gender dynamics.
For as long as we can remember, women have faced a multitude of societal challenges, from workplace discrimination to unequal pay and even harassment. In light of contemporary discussions surrounding these issues, Nader’s work is especially timely. He noticed that many vintage ads perpetuated sexist stereotypes and decided to directly confront this by placing men in the roles that women were traditionally assigned.
During a family gathering last Thanksgiving in New Jersey, Nader overheard some of his relatives asserting that women were naturally suited for cooking and managing household tasks. “It was shocking to see that some still hold these outdated beliefs,” he shared on his website. “Even though those ads are a relic of the past, their essence lingers in today’s social fabric. I envisioned a world where these roles are reversed, allowing men to experience the very stereotypes they often impose on women.”
In one of his recreated ads, men are depicted as being burdened with the responsibility of washing dishes, reminiscent of how women have often been portrayed in similar contexts. Another ad plays on the objectification of women by suggesting that men are merely decorative pieces in a home.
These recreated advertisements serve as a mirror, reflecting the discomfort and anger that many women have felt for years. Nader’s detailed work highlights the ridiculousness of these outdated norms, showcasing men in stereotypically feminine roles while keeping the visuals strikingly similar to the originals.
“Seeing men in these roles can provoke feelings ranging from discomfort to outright anger,” Nader remarked. “I hope this project encourages a reevaluation of the stereotypical gender roles that patriarchal societies impose upon us.” You can explore more of Nader’s impactful work on Instagram.
