There’s a troubling trend among teenagers that refuses to fade: the consumption of Tide Pods. Yes, you read that correctly—young people are ingesting laundry detergent pods, often for the thrill of it, and sharing videos of their antics online. The situation has escalated to such a degree that the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) issued a “HIGH ALERT” regarding the alarming rise in incidents involving these laundry pods.
According to the AAPCC, “The American Association of Poison Control Centers expresses continued concern over the improper use of single-load laundry detergent packets as the number of intentional exposures among teenagers rises.” In the first two weeks of 2018 alone, poison control centers reported thirty-nine intentional exposure cases among teens aged thirteen to nineteen. This number skyrocketed to 86 cases within just three weeks—a truly shocking statistic.
The AAPCC emphasized the severe health risks associated with this reckless behavior, stating, “We cannot stress enough how dangerous this is to the health of individuals—it can lead to seizure, pulmonary edema, respiratory arrest, coma, and even death.”
In an unusual move, Tide itself is stepping in to combat this trend, releasing a video featuring NFL star Rob Gronkowski. He emphasizes the importance of using Tide Pods for their intended purpose: laundry. “What the heck is going on, people?” he questions. “Use Tide Pods for washing.”
The issue has taken on a bizarre twist, as some teens are even leaving reviews on platforms like Amazon, claiming the detergent pods taste good. Some reviews bizarrely suggest using Tide Pods as a “flavor enhancer” for water or even sandwiching them between Pop-Tarts! Amazon has stated, “Customer safety is of the utmost importance,” and is working to remove any reviews that promote dangerous behaviors like consuming Tide Pods.
Let’s hope this reckless trend fades away before it causes more harm. It really makes one nostalgic for simpler times, like when kids used to play with Tamagotchis or chat on AIM. Can we bring those back, please?
