While there’s an abundance of Disney guidebooks available—covering everything from dining and money-saving tips to guides for runners—there was a notable absence of resources tailored for families with disabilities until the release of “Mouse Ears for Everyone” by Sarah Thompson.

Thompson, a former Disney employee and a mother of two, including a son with autism, was taken aback by the lack of supportive information for families needing accommodations. “I searched extensively online and found little to no resources. That’s when I decided to write this book to provide valuable information for families that are looking for guidance,” Thompson shared with The Mighty. “It was frustrating to see our community overlooked, and I felt compelled to address this gap.”

Initially conceived as a guide specifically for families with autism, Thompson’s book has expanded to encompass various disabilities, including developmental delays, sensory sensitivities, mobility challenges, food allergies, service animals, hearing impairments, and other medical requirements. Her experience from 25 Disney trips, combined with interviews with families and Disney staff, informed the content of the guide. Thompson also encourages readers to provide feedback through the “Mouse Ears for Everyone” website, ensuring that the guide remains comprehensive.

“Disney is designed to be accessible, but not every aspect is user-friendly,” Thompson noted. “For instance, some lines aren’t wide enough for electric conveyance vehicles, necessitating a transfer to a provided wheelchair. While some attractions require lifting family members, others allow you to remain in your chair entirely.”

When it comes to accommodations at the resorts, Thompson pointed out that accessibility varies. “I particularly enjoy the Caribbean Resort due to its pool and bus access, but I recommend avoiding Disney’s Boardwalk if you’re looking for a deluxe option.”

For families concerned about the level of accessibility at Disney, Thompson reassures that adjustments can be made to fit individual needs. “While everything may not be perfect, the experience can still be magical,” she explained. “Some preparation is required, along with items like noise-canceling headphones, but Disney excels in customer service and prioritizes meeting everyone’s needs.”

Thompson advises parents to prepare their children by showing them videos of the attractions, resorts, and parks beforehand. “This way, they’ll understand that Mickey isn’t the size of an average mouse and that some rides can be dark,” she added.
