Making friends as an adult can be challenging—especially when you’re a parent navigating the complex social landscape of elementary school. As I approach the midpoint of my daughter Mia’s kindergarten year, I find myself struggling to connect with other moms while she effortlessly thrives socially. Mia has made friends, attends birthday parties, and enjoys playdates, but I’m left feeling isolated in the friend department.
In her previous preschools, there were ample opportunities to bond with other parents during drop-off and pick-up. We would chat, arrange outings, and even host moms’ nights out. This year, however, is different. The playdates and parties Mia is invited to often involve drop-offs, which is great for giving us a break but eliminates the chance for me to bond with the other moms. At such a large school, the short drop-off window and the bustling pick-up times mean I often miss out on opportunities to connect.
To be honest, there are many afternoons when I could interact with other parents at the playground, yet I often use my younger son, Leo, as an excuse to avoid it. Waking him from his nap can be a challenge, and he’s usually cranky and demanding. It often feels easier to head home instead of facing the social scene, both logistically and mentally.
As a writer, I often find myself lost in thought, paying little attention to my appearance. I typically roll out of bed, throw on some gym clothes, and dive into work. When it’s time for school pick-up, I’m usually late and feeling flustered. I forget to check a mirror or freshen up, but once I step outside, I’m reminded of the world around me and the need to engage with others. I remind myself to step out of my bubble, put down my phone, and socialize.
Interestingly, while I thrive in online interactions—where I can connect through Direct Messages with those already familiar with me—in-person conversations often leave me rambling and second-guessing myself. I tend to say things I later regret, which adds to my anxiety.
